Chapter 11 - THE MEETING

Maya met them in the reception area.
“The meeting is with Roland.”
Celeste rose from her chair.
“I’m part of this family.”
“You are not part of this appointment.”
Roland stared at his shoes.
I stood behind Maya and watched him choose.
It took him twelve seconds.
“Mom, please wait downstairs.”
Celeste looked at him as though he had slapped her.
“You need someone on your side.”
“I need to do this.”
She brushed past me.
As she reached the elevator, she whispered, “You’ll regret separating a man from his mother.”
“I asked him to attend a meeting alone.”
The doors closed on her expression.
Inside the conference room, Roland put a stack of statements on the table.
His company had been losing money for almost a year.
A major customer had left.
He had hidden late invoices, borrowed to cover payments, and kept telling everyone the next contract would solve everything.
“How much debt?” I asked.
He gave me a number.
I looked at Maya.
She wrote it down without reacting.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you believed in me.”
“I was your wife. Believing in you wasn’t the same as agreeing to be lied to.”
His face crumpled.
“I know.”
I waited.
He told us about Faye’s loan.
His mother’s earlier loan.
The fake funding letter.
The email he had sent from my account after using the password I’d trusted him with.
He admitted sending Dad a message saying I needed distance.
Then I asked about the dinner.
He rubbed his palms together.
“Mom said we needed a plan.”
“A plan to get the money.”
“Yes.”
“Why leave me without the car?”
“I thought if you were home, you wouldn’t go to your father before we figured out what to say.”
The air left my lungs.
He saw it happen.
“Not to trap you. I just—”
“You thought keeping me there would buy you time.”
He lowered his head.
“Yes.”
For days, I had told myself that part had been careless.
Cruel, but careless.
Now even that small mercy was gone.
Maya slid the tissue box toward me.
I didn’t reach for it.
Roland whispered, “I’m sorry.”
I stared at him across the table.
“You said it would be easier for everyone.”
“I know.”
“Who was everyone?”
He opened his mouth.
May you like
Closed it.
And finally, with no mother beside him and no phone to hide behind, my husband had no answer.
