Chapter 3: The Neighbor Who Saved Two Lives

Forty-two-year-old Evelyn Harper hadn't planned on becoming a hero.
She was watering flowers in her backyard when she heard something strange.
Not screaming.
Not shouting.
A baby crying.
For hours.
At first she assumed the young parents were exhausted.
By sunset...
The crying hadn't stopped.
By midnight...
It became desperate.
The next morning, Evelyn walked to Clara's front door.
She rang the bell.
No answer.
She knocked harder.
Still nothing.
Then she heard it.
A weak...
Barely audible...
Single knock.
From upstairs.
She called Clara's name.
Silence.
Then another faint knock.
Three slow taps.
Evelyn immediately dialed 911.
Firefighters arrived within minutes.
When nobody answered the door, they forced it open.
The smell of blood hit them instantly.
One firefighter raced upstairs.
Seconds later, his radio exploded with panic.
"We've got a postpartum hemorrhage!"
"Female, barely responsive!"
"Newborn alive!"
Paramedics found Clara unconscious beside the bassinet.
Her pulse was dangerously weak.
She had survived nearly three days without food or water.
Only inches away...
Leo was still alive.
The tiny baby had cried until his voice became almost silent.
One paramedic gently lifted him from the bassinet while another began massive blood transfusions on Clara.
As they wheeled her toward the ambulance, Evelyn reached over and squeezed her cold hand.
"You held on," she whispered.
"You held on long enough."
Clara's eyelids fluttered.
Only one sentence escaped her cracked lips.
May you like
"...Don't... let... him... take... my... baby..."
Those were the last words she spoke before slipping back into unconsciousness.
