Chapter 1 - SEAT A1

My husband gave my front-row seat at Fashion Week to his twenty-four-year-old mistress.

Then I saw what she was wearing around her neck.

My dead mother’s emerald necklace.

For a second, the entire room disappeared.

The lights.

The cameras.

The models gathering backstage.

The low hum of editors, celebrities, buyers, and people who made a living pretending they were never impressed by anything.

All I could see were those emeralds.

My mother used to wear them every Christmas.

Every anniversary.

Every birthday dinner when my father was still alive.

Before she died, she put the velvet box into my hands.

“Don’t wear this for anyone else,” she told me. “Wear it when you need to remember who you are.”

Now it was hanging from Vanessa Hart’s neck.

And Vanessa was sitting in my chair.

Seat A1.

Front row.

My name was printed clearly on the invitation in my hand.

CLAIRE VALE.

GUEST OF HONOR.

SEAT A1.

There was no mistake.

Vanessa noticed me before Adrian did.

Her lips curved into a smile.

“Oh,” she said. “Claire.”

Like we were neighbors running into each other at a grocery store.

Not wife and mistress meeting ten feet from a runway.

She touched the emerald necklace.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

“I didn’t know you were coming.”

Behind me, someone whispered, “That’s Adrian Vale’s wife.”

Another voice answered, “Oh my God.”

Phones started rising.

Vanessa crossed one leg over the other.

“Seating changes happen,” she said. “Maybe they forgot to tell you.”

I stared at her.

Then Adrian finally turned.

My husband of eleven years was sitting two seats away.

He didn’t look ashamed.

He looked irritated.

That hurt more.

“Claire.”

His voice was low.

Controlled.

He gave me the same look he used when a waiter brought the wrong wine.

“What are you doing here?”

I almost laughed.

“What am I doing here?”

An event assistant rushed toward me.

“Ms. Vale?”

“Yes.”

“May I scan your invitation?”

I handed it over.

She checked it.

Then her tablet.

Then Vanessa.

Her expression changed.

“There appears to be a seating issue.”

“No,” I said.

She blinked.

“There isn’t.”

Vanessa’s smile tightened.

Adrian stood halfway.

“Claire. Not here.”

That was Adrian’s favorite sentence.

Not here.

Not now.

Don’t make a scene.

We’ll talk later.

Later usually meant never.

For months, I had known about Vanessa.

She posted hotel balconies.

Restaurant tables.

Adrian’s watch in the corner of a photo.

The passenger seat of his Bentley.

Captions like:

A woman knows when she’s chosen.

Never settle for being hidden.

If he wanted to, he would.

She never wrote my name.

She didn’t have to.

Adrian thought my silence meant weakness.

It didn’t.

I had stopped confronting him because confrontation taught liars how much you knew.

So I stopped teaching him.

I started listening.

Saving.

Remembering.

His thumb tapped against his index finger.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

His nervous habit.

“Go home,” he mouthed.

I looked at him.

For one second, I felt like the Claire I had been for years.

The woman who protected her husband’s reputation at the expense of her own dignity.

Then I looked down at my invitation.

GUEST OF HONOR.

I smiled.

“You should’ve read the invitation.”

Something changed in Adrian’s face.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Adrian?”

Before he could answer, the room behind me shifted.

People moved aside.

Whispers followed.

Celeste Moreau was coming toward us.

Adrian stood immediately.

Vanessa sat straighter.

Celeste ignored both of them.

She walked directly to me.

“Claire.”

She took my hands and kissed my cheek.

Cameras started firing.

Then she looked toward my chair.

At Vanessa.

At the necklace.

Her expression hardened.

“Why,” she asked loudly, “is my muse standing in the aisle?”

The first three rows went silent.

Adrian stared at me.

Vanessa went pale.

Celeste’s eyes dropped again to my mother’s emeralds.

Then she said something even quieter.

“Claire… why is she wearing the necklace from the original sketches?”

May you like

My stomach turned.

Because that necklace had never appeared in any sketch Adrian was supposed to have seen.
