Chapter 3 - The Signature I Never Gave

“What release?”

Daniel’s fingers loosened.

“That’s enough.”

I stepped away from him.

“What release, Lauren?”

She looked between us.

For the first time, her expression wasn’t smug.

It was uncertain.

“The property settlement.”

A strange stillness moved through my body.

“What property settlement?”

Daniel glanced toward the guests.

“Lower your voice.”

“You put another woman in my seat.”

My voice stayed level.

“You gave her my mother’s jewelry.”

I held his gaze.

“You lost the right to ask me to make this smaller.”

Lauren reached for her clutch.

Daniel turned sharply.

“Don’t.”

But she was already holding her phone.

“He showed me a document.”

She opened a photograph and handed it to me.

My name appeared beneath a paragraph I had never read.

Personal jewelry transferred voluntarily as part of an agreed marital separation.

Below it was a signature that looked like mine.

Almost.

The capital letter was wrong.

So was the last loop.

I had stopped signing that way after breaking my wrist eleven years earlier.

Ellie leaned against my side.

“Mom?”

I locked the phone and handed it back.

“Go with Nora.”

Nora Bell, the event coordinator, stood several feet away.

She had tears in her eyes.

“I’ll stay with her,” she said immediately.

“I’m not leaving you,” Ellie whispered.

“You already helped me.”

I kissed her forehead.

“Now let an adult help.”

Daniel exhaled like I had finally become reasonable.

“Good. We can sit down and explain—”

“Frank.”

Our project manager stepped closer.

“Would you witness something?”

His jaw tightened.

“Absolutely.”

I took out my phone.

I photographed Lauren’s document with her permission.

Then I recorded the pearls resting against her gown.

“The necklace belonged to my mother,” I said.

“I gave it to Daniel for cleaning. I did not give him permission to transfer it.”

Daniel reached toward my phone.

Frank moved between us.

“Don’t,” he said.

Daniel stared at him.

“You work for me.”

“I work for the company.”

Lauren unclasped the necklace.

For several seconds, she struggled with the tiny catch.

Then she placed the pearls in my hand.

They were warm from her skin.

That almost broke me.

I wrapped them in a clean napkin.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You’re making a mistake.”

“No.”

I looked at the photograph of the forged document.

“I think I’m finally seeing one.”

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unfamiliar number.

I’m Owen Price, company controller. Please don’t sign anything tonight.

May you like

Then a second message appeared.

The document she showed you isn’t the only one.
