My Husband Dragged Me Across the Floor While I Was Pregnant—He Didn't Know I Owned Everything

The first sound I heard was my skull slamming against the hardwood floor.

The second was my husband's laughter.

Not the laugh of a man who had just hurt his pregnant wife.

The laugh of a man who thought he had merely dropped a glass.

"Get up."

Adrian's hand clamped around my ankles, and with one brutal yank, he dragged me off the bed my doctor had forbidden me to leave.

Strict bed rest.

No stress.

No lifting.

No stairs.

No sudden movement.

Not with twins growing inside me.

Not with a high-risk pregnancy and a cervix my specialist had warned was "one bad day away from catastrophe."

My nightgown twisted around my legs as my body scraped across the polished oak floor.

Then my head hit the wood again.

A blinding burst of pain exploded behind my eyes.

From the doorway, Vanessa applauded.

"Oh, please," she scoffed, casually sipping champagne from one of my crystal flutes. "She's been putting on this dying-princess act for weeks."

Downstairs, Adrian's guests filled every corner of the house.

Venture capital partners.

Tech founders.

Investors in tailored Italian suits.

Women wearing designer dresses and perfectly rehearsed smiles.

Music pounded through the walls.

Someone downstairs shouted for another round of martinis.

Adrian drove the toe of his shoe into my back.

"Stop pretending you're dying," he barked. "Get downstairs and make my guests some drinks."

A sharp cramp ripped through my lower abdomen.

For one terrifying moment, panic surged inside me.

Not for myself.

For the two tiny heartbeats I had promised to protect.

But my face never changed.

Years of marriage had taught me one lesson.

Adrian fed on fear.

He loved tears.

He enjoyed begging.

So I gave him nothing.

I stayed on the floor, my cheek pressed against the cold wood, breathing slowly through the pain.

Vanessa crouched beside me.

Her expensive perfume filled the air.

"You look absolutely pathetic, Mara."

I slowly turned my head and looked straight into her eyes.

Expressionless.

No anger.

No tears.

No pleading.

Just silence.

For the first time that evening, her smile faltered.

Adrian crouched beside me, lowering his voice.

"Don't embarrass me tonight," he warned. "These people decide whether my venture fund survives."

I almost smiled.

No...

They didn't.

My fingers inched toward the phone lying beneath the edge of the bed.

He had knocked it out of my hand earlier.

The screen was cracked.

Still glowing.

Adrian noticed.

He laughed again.

"What are you doing?" he mocked. "Calling an ambulance?"

I looked up at him.

"No."

His grin faded just enough.

"Then who are you calling?"

Without answering, I unlocked the phone with my thumb.

Not the emergency screen.

The encrypted banking application.

Then a secure legal authorization portal Adrian had never known existed.

He believed he owned everything.

The company.

The mansion.

The money.

He was wrong.

He owned the logo.

I owned every loan keeping it alive.

Every debt.

Every guarantee.

Every document powerful enough to erase his empire overnight.

My fingers trembled as I entered the final security code.

One confirmation window appeared.

Hostile Acquisition Authorization

I pressed Approve.

Outside the bedroom, another wave of laughter erupted from the party.

Inside, I placed one trembling hand over my stomach.

"Hold on," I whispered to my babies.

"Mommy's almost finished."

By the time Adrian's guests walked out that front door...

He wouldn't own the venture capital firm.

He wouldn't own the mansion.

May you like

He wouldn't even own the floor he was standing on.
