CHAPTER 2 — The Man Who Lost Everything Before Midnight

At 11:17 PM, Marcus was sitting in his private office.

He was celebrating.

A bottle of expensive champagne sat on the table.

His mistress sat across from him, smiling.

“Finally,” she said. “The hotel is ours.”

Marcus smiled.

“Not just this hotel.”

He looked through the window at the city lights.

“The entire empire.”

But then his phone rang.

One call.

Then another.

Then another.

The smile slowly disappeared.

His assistant entered the room, pale-faced.

“Marcus…”

“What?”

“The board members are requesting an emergency meeting.”

Marcus frowned.

“At midnight?”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible. I control the board.”

The assistant hesitated.

“No, sir.”

Marcus stood up.

“What did you say?”

The assistant lowered his voice.

“You don’t control the board anymore.”

The room became silent.

Then Marcus’s phone received an email.

A legal document.

His eyes moved across the page.

And for the first time in years…

He felt fear.

The ownership structure had changed.

The company shares he thought belonged to him were being reclaimed.

The properties.

The hotels.

The investments.

Everything.

The truth was finally revealed.

Isabella’s family had never sold the empire.

They had only allowed Marcus to operate it.

He was not the owner.

He was the face.

A temporary manager who had mistaken trust for ownership.

Marcus immediately called Isabella.

She answered calmly.

“Where are you?”

His voice was different now.

No arrogance.

No anger.

Only panic.

“Isabella… what did you do?”

She looked out from her father’s office window.

The same city lights surrounded her.

“I didn’t do anything, Marcus.”

“You destroyed everything!”

“No.”

Her voice remained steady.

“You destroyed it the moment you believed I was powerless.”

Marcus gripped the phone.

“You’re my wife.”

Isabella closed her eyes.

“I was your wife when you needed me.”

A painful silence followed.

“But when you chose to humiliate me in front of everyone…”

She paused.

“You stopped being my husband.”

The call ended.

And at midnight, Marcus walked into the emergency board meeting.

But the people waiting for him were not his employees.

They were the owners.
