CHAPTER 2: The Man Who Forgot Who Built His Kingdom

The next morning, Ethan woke up believing he could still fix everything.
He called Ava twenty-three times.
She answered on the twenty-fourth.
“Please,” he said immediately.
“I made a mistake.”
Ava sat inside her private office overlooking the city.
The same office Ethan had never known existed.
The walls were covered with awards.
Photographs.
Memories of the empire her grandfather built.
“You didn’t make a mistake, Ethan.”
“You made a choice.”
Silence.
“I was embarrassed,” he admitted.
“I thought people would judge me because my wife didn’t look like the women beside executives.”
Ava closed her eyes.
That sentence hurt more than she expected.
Not because it surprised her.
Because it confirmed everything.
“You weren’t embarrassed by my dress.”
“You were embarrassed by my existence.”
Ethan had no answer.
Because she was right.
For years, he had accepted her sacrifices.
But when success arrived…
he wanted someone else beside him.
“Ava, I love you.”
She looked at the divorce papers sitting on her desk.
“No.”
“You loved the version of me that helped you survive.”
“You loved the woman who worked quietly behind you.”
“But you never respected the woman standing beside you.”
Ethan started crying.
“I can change.”
Ava looked through the glass window at Sterling Global’s headquarters.
“I spent seven years helping you become someone.”
“Now I need to spend time becoming myself again.”
Later that day, the board meeting began.
Ethan walked in expecting mercy.
Instead, he found every executive already seated.
Ava entered last.
The room immediately stood.
The chairman placed a folder on the table.
“Mr. Ethan Carter.”
“You are officially removed from your position as vice president.”
Ethan looked shocked.
“You can’t do this.”
Ava calmly opened the folder.
“I can.”
“Because I own the company.”
The truth finally destroyed the illusion.
Ethan hadn’t lost his position because Ava was cruel.
He lost it because he was never the man he pretended to be.
Outside the building, reporters waited.
The same cameras that once celebrated his promotion now captured his downfall.
Madeline disappeared before the news cycle ended.
She didn’t want a man who had nothing without Ava.
And Ethan finally understood something painful.

The woman he thought was holding him back…
