Chapter 6 - The Party They Planned for My Destruction

Daniel controlled every detail of the anniversary gala.

He selected the hotel.

He approved the guest list.

He invited investors, journalists, politicians, and senior Hartwell executives.

He believed the evening would mark his public transition from my husband to the true leader of my company.

I encouraged him.

“That sounds beautiful,” I said whenever he mentioned the plans.

He mistook obedience for defeat.

Sloane chose a silver dress designed to hide her pregnancy until the moment she wanted to reveal it.

Margaret rehearsed a speech about family courage and difficult transitions.

They had planned my humiliation like a corporate presentation.

What they did not know was that Naomi’s team had replaced the hotel’s audiovisual contractor.

Every camera in the ballroom fed into a secure external server.

Every microphone remained active.

The district attorney’s financial-crimes investigators waited in a conference room two floors above us.

The Hartwell board met secretly three hours before the gala.

They reviewed the forged medical documents.

They examined the stolen transfers.

They listened to recordings of Daniel discussing my medication.

The vote to remove him as CEO was unanimous.

But we did not announce it.

Not yet.

At seven thirty, I entered the ballroom in a black dress.

The guests applauded.

Daniel kissed my cheek for the cameras.

“You look incredible.”

“So do you.”

His hand rested against my back.

For anyone watching, we looked like a perfect couple.

“You’re feeling okay?” he asked.

“Clearer than I have in months.”

His smile flickered.

Before he could respond, Sloane joined us.

She embraced me carefully.

“I hope you can forgive me someday.”

Daniel shot her a warning glance.

I pretended not to notice.

“For what?”

Her lips parted.

Then she smiled.

“Nothing.”

At nine fifteen, Daniel stepped onto the stage.

He spoke about loyalty.

He praised my father.

He thanked our guests for supporting our marriage.

Then he asked Sloane to join him.

Whispers spread through the room.

He placed his hand on her stomach.

And he publicly announced their affair.

For one final moment, he believed he had won.

Then I locked the doors.
