Chapter 4: The Last Signature

Six months later...

The Harlan mansion had become government property.

Victor and Marissa were convicted of fraud, unlawful imprisonment, attempted murder, and financial conspiracy.

Adrian accepted a plea deal.

He lost every company, every account, every luxury he had stolen.

His final asset...

Was a prison uniform.

On the morning of sentencing, Adrian asked for one last meeting with Elena.

She agreed.

Not out of love.

Out of closure.

He sat across the glass divider, thinner than she remembered.

"I loved you," he whispered.

Elena looked at him quietly.

"No."

"You loved what my name could buy."

He lowered his head.

"I'm sorry."

She reached into her bag and removed a single sheet of paper.

The divorce decree.

Already signed.

She slid it beneath the opening in the glass.

"You wanted my signature."

She stood.

"Here's the only one you'll ever get."

Without another word, she walked away.

Outside the courthouse, Malcolm waited beside the car.

He smiled proudly as Elena stepped into the sunlight.

"You saved the family long before I saved you."

Elena looked up at the clear blue sky.

For the first time in months...

She could breathe without fear.

Some inherit fortunes.

Others inherit courage.

Elena left with both.

The End.
