Chapter 5 - SARAH'S BETRAYAL

Sarah was sitting beside Greg in the airport lounge.

She looked exhausted.

Her wedding makeup was smeared.

Her dress was torn.

But when she saw me, her expression changed.

She stood.

“Elena.”

I stopped several feet away.

“Where are you going?”

“I'm leaving.”

“With Greg?”

She looked at him.

Then back at me.

“He says you are trying to destroy us.”

I almost smiled.

“He doesn't need my help.”

Greg stood.

“You've made your point.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“I haven't.”

I placed a tablet on the table.

The surveillance photographs appeared.

Sarah stared.

“What's that?”

“Your husband following my daughter.”

She shook her head.

“That's impossible.”

“Look.”

She did.

Her face went pale.

“Greg?”

He didn't answer.

Sarah stepped backward.

“You lied to me.”

“I protected you.”

“You used me.”

“I needed your cooperation.”

Sarah looked at me.

“What does that mean?”

I didn't answer.

Greg did.

“You were the easiest way to get close to Elena.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

The airport suddenly felt silent.

She turned toward me.

“You knew?”

“I found out last night.”

She began crying.

“I didn't know.”

“You knew enough.”

She shook her head violently.

“I thought he loved me.”

Greg looked away.

Sarah slapped him.

Then again.

“You told me Elena was jealous.”

Greg said nothing.

“You told me she hated me.”

Still nothing.

“You told me she wanted my marriage to fail.”

He finally whispered:

“I needed you angry at her.”

Sarah collapsed into a chair.

I watched her.

Part of me wanted to comfort her.

But then I remembered Mia falling.

I remembered my mother saying the ceremony mattered more.

I remembered Sarah screaming at my daughter.

So I stayed silent.

Mark walked toward us.

“The police are on their way.”

Greg suddenly ran.

Security officers tackled him before he reached the exit.

Sarah screamed.

“Greg!”

He looked back at her.

“You don't understand!”

She shouted:

“I understand everything!”

As officers dragged him away, something fell from his jacket.

A small USB drive.

Daniel picked it up.

My heart tightened.

“What is it?”

Mark examined it.

“Probably evidence.”

We returned to the island.

The drive contained one video.

It showed my parents meeting Greg six months before the wedding.

My mother sat at the table.

Dad sat beside her.

Greg placed a document in front of them.

My mother signed it.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“She'll never suspect us.”

Dad laughed.

“She still thinks we're her parents.”

The video ended.

I stared at the screen.

Mia walked into the room.

“Mommy?”

I quickly closed the laptop.

“Yes?”

She climbed onto the sofa beside me.

“Are we safe?”

I hugged her.

“Yes.”

But for the first time, I wasn't completely sure.

Because there was one person still missing from the story.

Someone who had been financing Greg.

Someone who had instructed him.

Someone who wanted my company.

And whoever that person was…

They had just sent me a message.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

There was one sentence.

You stopped the wedding.

May you like

Another message arrived.

You should have stopped digging.
