Chapter 1 - GET HER OUT

“Get her out of here.”
My ex-husband didn’t whisper it.
He pointed straight at me in the middle of the most important company gala of the year and said it loud enough for three hundred people to hear.
“Security. Remove her.”
For half a second, nobody moved.
Then two guards grabbed my arms.
The ballroom went dead silent.
Crystal chandeliers burned above us. Champagne glasses stopped halfway to people’s mouths. Every executive, investor, board member, and spouse in the room turned to look at me.
At him.
At the disaster unfolding between us.
Marcus Whitmore stood twenty feet away in a black tuxedo, one hand resting comfortably around the waist of Vanessa Hale, the woman he had left me for.
Vanessa wore a silver dress and the smile of someone who believed she had already won.
Marcus looked almost pleased.
“This is embarrassing, Rebecca,” he said.
I stared at him.
He gave me that familiar little smirk.
The one he used whenever he thought he had control.
“You should’ve stayed gone.”
One of the guards tightened his grip.
“Ma’am, we need you to come with us.”
“I’m coming.”
My voice was calm.
Marcus’s smile twitched.
Maybe he expected tears.
Maybe he wanted me to scream.
Maybe he wanted me to beg him not to humiliate me in front of everyone.
I did none of those things.
I picked up my clutch from the table.
Straightened my black dress.
Then I let security walk me toward the ballroom doors.
People whispered as I passed.
“That’s his ex-wife.”
“I heard she used him.”
“She just showed up here?”
“God, how humiliating.”
I heard every word.
I kept walking.
Marcus had spent six months making sure people believed exactly what he wanted them to believe.
That I was bitter.
That I was broke.
That I had lived off him.
That he had carried me through our entire marriage.
And I had never corrected anyone.
Marcus thought silence meant defeat.
He never understood that sometimes silence is just someone waiting for the right moment.
We were ten feet from the exit when the ballroom doors suddenly opened from the other side.
A tall gray-haired man stepped in.
Harrison Cole.
Chairman of Cole-Whitmore Technologies.
The man whose name was printed above Marcus’s on every annual report.
The room changed instantly.
People stood straighter.
Conversations stopped.
Marcus’s face brightened.
“Mr. Cole.”
But Harrison wasn’t looking at Marcus.
He was looking at me.
Then at the guards holding my arms.
His expression hardened.
“What the hell is going on?”
Marcus chuckled.
“Nothing serious. Rebecca crashed the gala.”
Harrison slowly turned toward him.
“Rebecca?”
“My ex-wife,” Marcus said. “She doesn’t belong here.”
Harrison looked back at me.
Then he said seven words that destroyed the room.
“Release her immediately. She’s my successor.”
The guards dropped their hands.
Someone gasped.
A champagne glass hit the floor.
Marcus went completely still.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
And Harrison wasn’t finished.
He reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.
Pulled out a sealed black folder.
Then looked directly at Marcus.
“Actually,” he said, “Rebecca is the reason tonight’s board meeting was moved up.”
Marcus swallowed.
“What board meeting?”
Harrison handed me the folder.
I took it.

And for the first time that night, I smiled.
“The one about you.”
