Chapter 1 - THE WORDS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

“Grandpa is luring Dad out of the meeting room.”
The sentence was only eight words.
But those eight words froze an entire room.
Lucien Vale stopped breathing.
For a moment, he didn’t hear the shouting around him. He didn’t hear the cameras clicking outside the glass doors. He didn’t hear the distant footsteps of people running through the old council hall.
All he heard was his daughter’s tiny voice.
Ava.
His four-year-old little girl.
Standing there with tears running down her face, clutching the sleeve of his jacket like she was afraid he would disappear.
“Say that again,” Lucien whispered.
Ava looked up at him.
Her eyes were wide.
“Grandpa is luring Dad out of the meeting room.”
The room went silent.
Not normal silence.
The kind of silence that came right before something broke.
Lucien slowly turned his head.
Across the room stood Charles Vale.
His father.
The man who had built an empire from nothing.
The man who taught Lucien that emotions were weaknesses.
The man who never made a move without having three backup plans.
Charles didn’t look surprised.
That was the problem.
He looked caught.
“Dad,” Lucien said quietly.
Charles’s expression hardened.
“Lucien, listen to me—”
“No.”
Lucien stepped forward.
His voice became colder.
“I want to know why my four-year-old daughter just described a strategy meeting like she was sitting at the table.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Mason stepped between them.
Mason Reed.
Charles’s right-hand man.
The person who had followed the Vale family for fifteen years.
“Forget what she said,” Mason growled.
Lucien looked at him.
Slowly.
“You heard her too.”
Mason’s jaw tightened.
“That kid doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”
Ava immediately grabbed Lucien’s hand.
“Yes, I do.”
Her voice shook.
“I heard Grandpa say Daddy would leave the room if something happened to me.”
Lucien’s eyes changed.
The anger was still there.
But something darker appeared.
Fear.
Because Ava wasn’t guessing.
She was remembering.
Mason noticed the change in Lucien’s face.
And that was when he made his mistake.
He moved.
Fast.
His hand grabbed Lucien’s jacket.
“Forget what she said.”
Then he swung.
The punch came straight toward Lucien’s jaw.
But Lucien had spent his entire life preparing for men like Mason.
He moved half an inch.
The fist cut through empty air.
And before Mason could recover—
Lucien hit back.
One punch.
Clean.
Explosive.
The sound echoed through the room.
Mason stumbled backward.
His body crashed into the rolling stage-riser dolly behind him.
Metal screamed.
The platform sections separated.
Wooden scenery cubes fell apart.
A cable trunk burst open.
Mason disappeared through the collapsing lower frame as everyone around him screamed.
Lucien didn’t even look back.
His eyes were still on Charles.
“Who came after me?”
Charles said nothing.
That answer was enough.
Lucien’s voice lowered.
“You knew something would happen.”
Charles remained silent.
“You used Ava.”
The accusation hit harder than any punch.
Several people in the room looked away.
Because they knew.
They knew Lucien was right.
Then Rebecca moved.
She rushed toward Ava.
“Give me the child!”
Lucien turned instantly.
“No.”
Rebecca ignored him.
“I’m her family!”
“You’re not touching her.”
Rebecca reached out.
Lucien grabbed her wrist.
For the first time, fear crossed Rebecca’s face.
“Lucien, wait—”
Too late.
He pulled her hand away from Ava.
The room watched as the man who had controlled himself for years finally snapped.
A single open-handed strike.
Thunderous.
Rebecca spun backward into the freestanding poster frame.
The frame collapsed.
Programs scattered across the carpet.
She fell beside the audience bench.
Ava covered her mouth.
“Daddy…”
Lucien froze.
That voice brought him back.
Not because he regretted protecting her.
Because he realized what she had just witnessed.
He turned toward Ava.
“I’m sorry.”
Ava looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“You’re scary when you’re angry.”
Those words hurt more than anything else in the room.
Lucien closed his eyes for one second.
Then he stood.
And faced Charles again.
“You hurt her to draw me out.”
Charles finally spoke.
“You don’t understand what was happening.”
“No.”
Lucien stepped closer.
“I understand perfectly.”
His eyes moved toward the closed council doors.
“Someone wanted me away from that meeting.”
Charles’s silence confirmed it.
Lucien noticed.
And then one small detail returned to his mind.
The words Ava used.
Not:
“Grandpa wanted you.”
Not:
“Grandpa called you.”
She said:
“Grandpa is luring Dad out of the meeting room.”
Precise.
Adult.
Calculated.
Those were not the words of a scared child.
Those were the words of someone repeating a conversation she had overheard.
Lucien looked around the room.
Slowly.
Someone had explained the plan.
Someone had told Ava exactly what was happening.
And that person was still here.
Then the lights inside the council chamber suddenly went dark.
A second later—
The locked doors opened from the inside.
Everyone turned.
Lucien stepped in front of Ava.
Because standing in the doorway was the one person nobody expected to see.
And he was holding proof that the entire attack had been planned long before tonight.
“Lucien,” the stranger said.
“You were never the target.”
May you like
A pause.
“You were the bait.”
