Chapter 10 - THE SAFE HOUSE

Ethan ran before Collins finished the sentence.

The drive lasted eighteen minutes.

It felt like eighteen years.

Police vehicles surrounded the safe house when they arrived.

One officer stood near the entrance with his weapon drawn.

Ethan jumped out.

“Where is my daughter?”

“Inside.”

“Is she hurt?”

“No.”

His knees nearly gave out.

Then he saw Sophie.

She came running through the doorway.

“Daddy!”

Ethan dropped to his knees and caught her.

She wrapped herself around him.

“I knew you’d come.”

“I’m here.”

He held her so tightly that Collins finally touched his shoulder.

“Sophie needs to breathe.”

Ethan loosened his arms.

“What happened?”

One of the officers explained.

A man had approached the rear fence wearing a utility company uniform.

The uniform was fake.

When challenged, he ran.

Officers found a vehicle two blocks away.

Inside were medical supplies.

Sedatives.

A forged passport with Sophie’s photograph.

And a second forged passport.

The name beneath the photograph was Amelia Blackwood.

Ethan stared at it.

“Why would Hale have a passport for my dead wife?”

Collins examined it.

The issue date was six months earlier.

“This isn’t for Amelia.”

“What?”

“It’s for someone who looks like her.”

Ethan frowned.

Then Sophie spoke.

“Celeste looks like Mommy when her hair is dark.”

Everyone turned.

Ethan remembered something.

When he first met Celeste after Amelia’s death, her hair had been dark brown.

Over the years, she had gradually lightened it.

The facial resemblance was not exact.

But with altered photographs and forged documents, it might have been enough.

Richard’s plan suddenly became clearer.

The Swiss trust required Amelia’s identity history.

If they could create the appearance that Amelia had survived or legally transferred rights before death, they could challenge Sophie’s ownership.

Hale had been preparing two different paths.

Use Sophie as beneficiary.

Or use a fake Amelia.

Collins looked at Ethan.

“This is bigger than an abduction attempt.”

Hale had built an identity fraud operation around Amelia’s death.

Sophie clutched Ethan’s sleeve.

“I want to go home.”

Ethan kissed the top of her head.

“We will.”

But Blackwood Manor was still a crime scene.

So Ethan took her to Amelia’s parents’ old cottage on the estate.

It had been empty for years.

Police secured the property.

That evening, Ethan and Sophie sat beside the fireplace.

For the first time in days, there were no detectives in the room.

No lawyers.

No Celeste.

No Richard.

Just father and daughter.

Sophie looked at him.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are you mad at me?”

Ethan felt stunned.

“Why would I be mad at you?”

“Because I found Mommy’s picture.”

His heart broke.

He moved beside her.

“No.”

“You opened the secret place.”

“That was brave.”

“Celeste said I ruin everything.”

Ethan closed his eyes for a second.

Then he took Sophie’s face gently in both hands.

“Listen to me.”

“You did not ruin anything.”

“You found the truth.”

“You saved yourself.”

“And maybe you saved me too.”

Sophie studied him.

Then she whispered.

“Mommy told me something before she died.”

Ethan froze.

“You remember her?”

“A little.”

“You were only a baby.”

“I know.”

“What do you remember?”

Sophie touched her own chest.

“A song.”

Ethan felt tears rise.

Amelia used to sing one lullaby every night.

Sophie began humming it.

Ethan covered his mouth.

Then Sophie said something strange.

“She said the bird watches the door.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What bird?”

Sophie pointed toward Amelia’s photograph.

In the picture, Amelia was sitting in the old nursery.

Behind her was a painted wooden bird mounted above the door.

Ethan stared.

The cottage had once been Sophie’s nursery before the main house renovation.

That painted bird was still upstairs.

May you like

He ran.

Behind the bird, they found a memory card.
