Chapter 13 - THE PROMISE UNDER THE OAK TREE

The land was protected by a conservation trust.

My father had signed the agreement six months before his death.

It prohibited commercial development for fifty years.

Richard’s twenty-two-million-dollar sale was worthless.

Northstar could never build there.

Taylor stared at the document.

“So all of this…”

“For land they couldn’t sell,” I said.

Park shook her head.

“Richard apparently never knew this existed.”

My father had deliberately kept the conservation agreement outside the family trust files.

He suspected Richard was stealing.

So he created a trap.

Anyone trying to secretly sell the property would expose themselves.

The flash drive contained evidence.

Bank statements.

Emails.

Copies of Richard’s earlier fraudulent transfers.

Enough to show a pattern stretching back more than a decade.

Park smiled for the first time in days.

“This is going to bury him.”

Richard learned about the documents that afternoon.

His attorney requested negotiations immediately.

Funny how quickly powerful men discover cooperation when prison becomes real.

He offered names.

Accounts.

Judges he had bribed.

Clients he had cheated.

And Evelyn.

He blamed everything on her.

Evelyn blamed everything on him.

Jason blamed both.

The alliance collapsed in less than forty-eight hours.

But I didn’t care anymore.

I cared about Lily.

She came home three days later.

The freezer was gone.

I had police remove it as evidence.

When Lily walked into the garage, she stopped.

Her hand tightened around mine.

“It’s gone?”

“Gone.”

“Forever?”

“Forever.”

She stared at the empty space.

Then she walked toward it.

One step.

Another.

Taylor watched from behind us.

Lily stood where the freezer had been.

Then she placed her stuffed rabbit on the floor.

“Grandma said this was my thinking place.”

I crouched beside her.

“What do you think it should be now?”

She considered the question seriously.

“A bike place.”

I smiled.

“A bike place?”

“For my purple bike.”

“Then that’s what it is.”

For the first time since the ambulance, Lily laughed.

It was small.

But real.

That night, after she fell asleep, Taylor and I sat in the kitchen.

“I don’t know if you can forgive me,” she said.

“For what?”

“For not seeing it.”

“I didn’t see it either.”

“But she was my mother.”

“And Lily is our daughter.”

Taylor wiped her eyes.

“I should have protected her.”

“We protect her now.”

She looked at me.

“Are we okay?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Too much had happened for easy promises.

“I don’t know.”

She nodded.

That honesty hurt.

But it was necessary.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Park.

I answered.

“What happened?”

“We found the missing two million.”

“Where?”

Park paused.

“You’re not going to like this.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where is it?”

“In an account created under Lily’s name.”

I stood.

“What?”

“And someone accessed that account yesterday.”

Yesterday.

While Richard was jailed.

While Evelyn was hospitalized under guard.

May you like

While Jason was under police protection.

Someone else was still involved.
