Chapter 11 - THE WRONG CAR

Daniel called Evan as he ran toward the elevators.
“I left her with the nurse for five minutes,” Evan said, breathless. “When I came back, she was gone.”
Bennett was already on her way to the hospital.
Daniel called Lily’s phone. It rang unanswered. He called again.
On the third try, she picked up.
“Daddy?”
“Where are you?”
“I’m in a car. Mr. Paul said you sent him.”
Paul had driven Caroline for three years. Daniel gripped the phone harder.
“Listen to me. Did he hurt you?”
“No. He said we’re going to get my birthday cake.”
“Put him on.”
There was a rustle. Paul’s voice came through.
“Mr. Mercer, your wife asked me to bring Lily home.”
“Take her back to the hospital.”
“She said she cleared it with the doctor.”
“She didn’t. Pull over somewhere public and tell me where you are.”
Paul hesitated. “I’m on Oak Street, near the pharmacy.”
Daniel put the call on speaker so Bennett, who had just reached him in the lobby, could hear. She directed a patrol car to the pharmacy.
Ten minutes later, Lily was safe in the back of a police car, annoyed that she hadn’t gotten cake. Paul gave Bennett Caroline’s text, which said Daniel wanted Lily brought home before the board meeting ended.
“He thought he was helping,” Bennett told Daniel. “We’re confirming the timing.”
Daniel went straight to Lily. She climbed into his arms carefully, protecting her wrist.
“I knew you didn’t send him,” she said. “You always tell me when plans change.”
“I should have told the nurse no one could take you.”
“I told him to call you. He said he would when we got there.”
Daniel held her a little longer.
Back at the office, Caroline told the board there had been a misunderstanding. Naomi showed everyone Paul’s message. It had been sent after Daniel entered the meeting.
One board member asked Caroline why she hadn’t told Daniel about the pickup herself.
“I was trying to spare Lily more stress,” Caroline said.
Then Bennett arrived at the conference room door.
“Mrs. Mercer,” she said, “I need to ask you about what happened on the staircase.”

Caroline closed her folder.
“Of course,” she replied. “I’ve wanted to explain that from the beginning.”
