Chapter 14 - No More Signatures

The transfer did not go through.
The court order had reached the administrator eleven minutes earlier.
Eleven minutes.
That was the distance between a locked account and another disaster.
Cynthia had submitted a declaration claiming Vanessa had suffered a pregnancy loss overnight.
The supporting medical statement carried Price’s name.
But Vanessa was sitting with investigators.
Alive.
Uninjured.
Never pregnant.
And Price was beginning to understand that Julian’s lawyers were protecting Julian.
Not him.
By noon, he admitted the records were false.
He identified the staff who had kept Elise confined and the people who had directed the embryo transfer.
He claimed he had been pressured.
Ortiz asked why the pressure had arrived in monthly payments.
He stopped talking for a while.
Then started again.
At the hospital, Elise went into labor.
The room shifted from questions to movement.
A nurse adjusted the bed.
Another asked who Elise wanted with her.
She looked at Alexander.
Then at me.
“Mara first.”
I took her hand.
Alexander stepped outside without protest.
For hours, Elise had been brave in the way people praise because it asks little of them.
Quiet.
Cooperative.
Grateful.
Labor stripped all of that away.
“I’m angry,” she said through clenched teeth.
“You’re allowed.”
“I love him.”
“I know.”
“I don’t know if I can live with him.”
“You don’t have to decide today.”
Her grip tightened.
“They took so much.”
I bent close.
“They don’t get this decision.”
Later, she asked for Alexander.
He came in wearing a plain hospital gown over his clothes.
His face looked wrecked.
Elise pointed at him.
“If I say stop, you stop.”
“Yes.”
“If I say leave, you leave.”
“Yes.”
“And nobody signs anything for me.”
He swallowed.
“Nobody.”
I stepped into the hallway.
June waited there with Lily.
My daughter ran into my arms so hard I stumbled.
I buried my face in her hair.
“Did they find the lady?”
“Yes.”
“Is she okay?”
“She’s getting help.”
Lily leaned back.
“Is the baby real?”
I laughed once, through tears.
“Yes.
The baby is real.”
At Whitmore headquarters, officers arrested Julian after investigators secured warrants supported by the growing evidence.
Cynthia was detained at a private airfield.
Vale was found in a roadside motel with cash, two phones, and a bag he had packed too late.
None of it brought David back.
I understood that before Ortiz finished telling me.
Then a sound came through the maternity-room door.
Thin.
Furious.
Alive.
A baby crying.
May you like
Lily turned toward it.
And for the first time all night, nobody in the hallway was afraid of what came next.
