Chapter 1: The Locked Door

The wedding was supposed to be perfect.

For months, Daniel Callahan had imagined this exact moment.

The flowers.
The music.
The woman he loved walking toward him.
And most importantly — his eight-year-old daughter Ellie standing beside him, smiling proudly as the flower girl.

Daniel had been a single father for nearly six years. After Ellie’s mother passed away, she became the center of his entire world.

He had promised her something when he first introduced Vanessa.

“Ellie, no one will ever replace you. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever.”

And Ellie believed him.

At least, she used to.

That afternoon, everything looked like a dream. The elegant wedding hall was filled with sunlight, guests were laughing, and Vanessa looked flawless in her white gown.

But three minutes before the ceremony began, Daniel noticed something was wrong.

Ellie was gone.

At first, he tried to stay calm.

“She probably went to look at the flowers,” he told himself.

But when he checked the garden, she wasn’t there.

The reception room.

Nothing.

The hallway.

Nothing.

The smile disappeared from Daniel’s face.

The wedding guests noticed his panic.

“Daniel, what’s happening?” Vanessa asked from behind him.

Her voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“My daughter is missing,” Daniel replied.

For a brief second, Vanessa’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Not concern.

Something else.

Something colder.

Then it disappeared.

“Daniel, don’t ruin our wedding over a child hiding somewhere.”

The words hit him harder than she realized.

A child?

His daughter wasn’t just “a child.”

She was his world.

Daniel walked away without answering.

He searched every corner of the venue until he reached the staircase near the old hallway.

Then he heard it.

A tiny sound.

A soft cry.

Coming from behind a locked door.

Daniel’s heart stopped.

He rushed forward.

“Ellie?”

Silence.

Then a trembling voice.

“...Daddy?”

Daniel grabbed the door handle.

Locked.

“Ellie, it’s Dad. Open the door.”

A few seconds later, the door opened.

And the little girl standing there broke his heart.

Her white flower girl dress was wrinkled. Her hair was messy. Tears covered her face.

She ran into his arms.

“Daddy…”

Daniel held her tightly.

“Who did this? What happened?”

Ellie buried her face into his chest.

Then she whispered:

“Vanessa told me to hide.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Ellie looked up with terrified eyes.

“She said after today, you wouldn’t need me anymore.”

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

Daniel slowly pulled his daughter closer.

“What else did she say?”

Ellie’s lips trembled.

“She said… there was no room for two girls in your heart.”

Daniel stared toward the wedding hall.

Toward the woman waiting for him.

The woman he was supposed to marry in three minutes.

And for the first time, he wondered if he had been protecting the wrong person.
