CHAPTER 2 — The Empire Begins To Fall

By Monday morning, the Whitmore family woke up to chaos.
The first article appeared at 6:03 a.m.
Then another.
Then another.
“Whitmore Real Estate Under Investigation.”
“Questions Raised About Hidden Financial Deals.”
“Powerful Family Faces Possible Legal Trouble.”
Richard threw the newspaper across his office.
“Find whoever did this.”
His assistant looked nervous.
“We’re trying.”
Richard slammed his fist against the desk.
“No.”
His voice lowered.
“Not trying.”
“Fix it.”
The assistant swallowed.
“There’s a problem.”
Richard looked up.
“What problem?”
“The information is everywhere.”
Richard froze.
“How?”
The assistant placed a folder on the desk.
“Someone released everything at once.”
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Emails.
Contracts.
Photos.
Evidence collected over years.
Richard stared at the pages.
Impossible.
Nobody had access to this.
Nobody except…
Arthur.
At the same time, Lily sat across from her father in a small quiet apartment.
She looked different.
Not healed.
Not yet.
But safer.
“Dad…”
Arthur looked up.
“I’m sorry.”
His expression softened.
“For what?”
“For not telling you.”
Arthur walked over and sat beside her.
“Lily.”
She looked at him.
“You survived.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was scared you would make things worse.”
Arthur looked away.
That hurt more than any wound.
Because his daughter had been afraid to ask him for help.
“I spent fifteen years trying to give you a normal life,” he said.
“But I forgot something.”
“What?”
“A father doesn’t protect his child by staying quiet.”
He took her hand.
“He protects her by standing between her and the person hurting her.”
That afternoon, Arthur met with his old team.
They were not soldiers anymore.
They were investigators.
Cyber specialists.
Former intelligence officers.
People who knew how to uncover the truth.
The leader, Daniel Cross, placed a file on the table.
“The Whitmores have been hiding crimes for twenty years.”
Arthur opened it.
Inside were names.
Victims.
Payments.
Cover-ups.
Arthur’s face hardened.
“How many people?”
Daniel looked down.
“Too many.”
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel asked:
“Are you ready to become that man again?”
Arthur closed the file.
“I never stopped being him.”
Meanwhile, Richard discovered something terrifying.
The police chief who had attended his Easter party…
Was avoiding his calls.
The judge who had attended his mother’s Christmas dinner…
Was suddenly unavailable.
The politicians who once answered immediately…
Stopped responding.
The Whitmore name was losing power.
And nobody knew why.
Except Arthur.
That night, Richard broke into Lily’s apartment.
He expected fear.
He expected begging.
Instead…
Arthur was sitting in the dark.
Waiting.
Richard stopped.
“How did you know I was coming?”
Arthur looked at him.
“Because men like you always come back.”
Richard smiled nervously.
“You think you’ve won?”
Arthur stood.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“I think you finally understand who you hurt.”
Richard tried to leave.
But the door opened.
Behind it stood investigators.
Police officers.
And cameras.
Recording everything.
Richard’s face went pale.
Arthur whispered:
“Game over.”
But Richard smiled.
A small, desperate smile.
Because he still had one secret.
May you like
A secret that could destroy Arthur too.
