Chapter 10 - Samuel’s Last File

They returned to the warehouse before sunrise.

Claire refused to let Lily out of her sight, so a child protection officer stayed with her nearby.

Marcus stood before locker seventeen.

The original brass key had fallen somewhere beside the building.

Police found it in the alley.

Now they had both.

Silver.

Brass.

Marcus examined the lock.

Two keyholes.

One hidden beneath a sliding plate.

Claire almost laughed.

“Dad always loved puzzles.”

Marcus inserted the silver key.

Claire used the brass one.

“Together?” he asked.

She nodded.

They turned.

Click.

The door opened.

Inside sat a small black case.

Nothing else.

Marcus removed it.

Claire opened the clasps.

Inside were paper files.

A flash drive.

A handwritten letter.

And a revolver.

Davis immediately secured the gun.

Claire picked up the letter.

Her father’s handwriting.

For Marcus and Claire.

If you are reading this, something happened to me.

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

Marcus continued reading aloud.

Evelyn Mercer has been stealing money from Reed Logistics through fake contractors for years. She has help inside city government and law enforcement.

Davis’s face hardened.

The letter listed names.

Councilmen.

A judge.

Two detectives.

Executives.

Then Samuel wrote:

The worst part is not the theft.

It is what Evelyn is willing to do to protect it.

Marcus paused.

Claire whispered, “Keep reading.”

I made the mistake of trusting her son, Julian.

Claire closed her eyes.

Marcus continued.

He came to me pretending he wanted to expose his mother.

Instead, he copied my evidence.

He told me if I went to police, Marcus would be arrested on fabricated drug charges and Claire would lose her scholarship after planted evidence made her appear to be cheating.

Marcus stared at the page.

“He threatened us.”

Samuel had signed the company away to buy time.

But he kept copies of everything.

The flash drive contained financial records.

Audio recordings.

Emails.

Payment logs.

And one video.

Davis inserted the drive.

Samuel appeared on screen.

This time he looked exhausted.

“If you’re watching this, I may already be dead.”

Claire covered her mouth.

“I have arranged a second copy with someone I trust.”

Marcus leaned closer.

“If Julian Mercer ever comes near my children, it means Evelyn never stopped.”

Samuel looked directly into the camera.

“Claire, he may try to charm you.”

She broke.

Marcus put an arm around her.

Their father continued.

“Do not blame yourself.”

Claire started crying harder.

“He is good at becoming whatever people need him to be.”

Marcus’s eyes burned.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t keep this away from you.”

The video ended.

Silence filled the warehouse.

Claire wiped her face.

“Dad knew.”

Davis nodded.

“This evidence could dismantle everything.”

Marcus looked at the file.

“Then Julian will try to destroy it.”

A loud explosion ripped through the rear wall.

Windows shattered.

Everyone dropped.

“Down!”

Flames erupted near the loading bay.

Davis shouted into his radio.

“Fire! Move!”

Claire grabbed the black case.

Marcus pulled her toward the exit.

Smoke poured through the warehouse.

Then a second explosion hit.

Part of the ceiling collapsed.

Marcus shoved Claire forward.

A steel beam fell between them.

“Marcus!”

“I’m okay!”

He wasn’t.

His leg was trapped.

Claire tried to climb over the beam.

Davis grabbed her.

“No!”

“My brother!”

Marcus coughed through the smoke.

“Take the evidence!”

“I’m not leaving you!”

Another section of ceiling groaned.

Marcus looked at her.

“Claire, go!”

Then someone stepped through the smoke behind him.

Marcus turned.

Julian.

Holding a pistol.

He smiled.

May you like

“Finally.”

And pointed the gun at Marcus’s head.
