Chapter 14 - The Man Behind the Paperwork

Richard Cole had been my attorney for eleven years.

He knew every bank account I owned.

Every contract I signed.

Every weakness in my company.

Every ugly detail of my marriage.

And Sofia trusted him because I did.

That was the mistake.

Reed searched Richard’s financial records while the tactical team moved toward my house.

Within minutes, the first links appeared.

Northmark Consulting.

A trust registered in Delaware.

A private ambulance company.

North Ridge Clinic.

All connected through legal structures created by Richard’s firm.

I felt sick.

“He built the system.”

Reed nodded.

“Looks like it.”

Vivienne whispered, “And Hayes protected it.”

“Yes.”

“Your mother financed it.”

“Yes.”

“And Michael moved money through it.”

“Yes.”

Everyone had a piece.

But Richard held the map.

We reached my house twenty-six minutes after my mother’s call.

Federal agents surrounded it silently.

Elena had managed to lock herself in the upstairs nursery with Rosie and Lily.

My mother was downstairs.

Alone.

At least she appeared alone.

I entered through the front door.

“Mom.”

She stood in the living room.

Gun on the table.

Hands empty.

“You came.”

I stared at the weapon.

“Step away from it.”

She did.

Reed entered behind me.

My mother smiled sadly.

“You brought the government into our home.”

“You paid someone to cut Sofia’s brakes.”

“I made one terrible decision.”

“One?”

I laughed.

“You helped cover up theft. You worked with Hayes. You knew Sofia survived.”

Her face changed.

“I didn’t know that until later.”

“Richard told you?”

Silence.

There it was.

“You knew Richard was involved.”

“He was protecting Michael.”

“No. He was protecting himself.”

My mother shook her head.

“You don’t understand the amount of money involved.”

“Then help me.”

She looked toward the stairs.

“Are the girls safe?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Then she whispered,

“Richard has Sofia.”

I stopped breathing.

“Where?”

“He called me twenty minutes ago.”

“Where?”

“He knows you found North Ridge.”

“Mom.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Harbor Six.”

Vivienne had been right.

Reed’s team moved instantly.

Harbor Six was an abandoned shipping warehouse by the old industrial pier.

We reached it after midnight.

No lights.

One vehicle outside.

Richard’s.

Agents surrounded the building.

We entered from three sides.

I heard a woman scream.

Sofia.

I knew her voice immediately.

I ran.

Reed shouted behind me.

“Daniel!”

I didn’t stop.

I burst into the main warehouse.

Richard stood near the loading bay.

Hayes beside him.

And Sofia sat in a chair between them.

Alive.

Thin.

Bruised.

But alive.

Our eyes met.

Everything inside me broke.

“Daniel.”

Her voice was barely there.

I took one step toward her.

Hayes raised his gun.

“Stop.”

I stopped.

Richard sighed.

“This did not have to become dramatic.”

I stared at him.

“You buried another woman under Sofia’s name.”

“A necessary complication.”

“Who was she?”

“Someone without family.”

My stomach turned.

Sofia shouted, “He’s lying! Her name was Maria Santos!”

Richard looked annoyed.

“She cleaned at the clinic.”

Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.

“She saw me alive.”

Richard shrugged.

“So she became inconvenient.”

I looked at him.

“You killed her.”

“I solved a problem.”

Reed’s voice came through my hidden earpiece.

Keep him talking.

I forced myself not to look toward the entrances.

“Why Sofia?”

Richard smiled.

“Because Sofia discovered what none of you were smart enough to see.”

“What?”

“The six million was nothing.”

He laughed softly.

“Mercer Development has been laundering money for twelve years.”

My blood went cold.

“That’s impossible.”

“Is it?”

“You handled the accounts.”

“Exactly.”

Sofia stared at me.

“Daniel, he used your company.”

Richard continued.

“Developments. Contractors. Land purchases. Consulting fees.”

He looked almost proud.

“Your clean reputation made it perfect.”

I whispered, “You framed me.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“I built you.”

Then Hayes’s phone rang.

He looked down.

That was the opening.

Sofia kicked the chair backward.

I lunged.

Agents stormed the warehouse.

Gunfire exploded.

Hayes fell behind a crate.

Richard grabbed Sofia.

I tackled him.

We hit the floor.

Sofia crawled away.

Richard reached for something inside his coat.

I pinned his wrist.

He smiled at me.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

He leaned close.

“This doesn’t end with me.”

Then agents dragged him away.

May you like

And for the first time in nineteen days—

Sofia collapsed into my arms.
