Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Name

Mariana stood on the forty-eighth floor of Escalante Tower.
The city stretched beneath her.
Morning sunlight reflected across the glass buildings.
Behind her, six executives sat around a long black conference table.
Nobody spoke.
Mariana wore a dark burgundy suit.
Her hair was pulled back.
The small cut on her lip remained visible.
She had deliberately refused makeup.
Her grandfather, Alejandro Escalante, stood near the window.
He was seventy-six years old.
And he had spent fifty years building one of the largest privately controlled investment empires in the world.
He looked at Mariana’s bruised cheek.
His expression hardened.
“You should have called me four years ago.”
Mariana didn’t turn.
“I needed to know whether Andrew loved me without the Escalante name.”
“And now you know.”
“Yes.”
Alejandro looked toward the executives.
“Continue.”
A man opened a folder.
“Whitmore Holdings has approximately sixty-eight million dollars in immediate liabilities.”
Another executive continued.
“Twenty-one million is indirectly secured through Escalante-controlled entities.”
Mariana turned.
“Indirectly?”
“Yes.”
“He never knew?”
“No.”
That had been intentional.
Four years earlier, when Andrew’s company began collapsing, Mariana had secretly instructed her family office to stabilize it.
She believed she was helping her husband.
She believed Andrew was proud.
Ambitious.
Sometimes arrogant.
But worth protecting.
She had been wrong.
“How much personal debt?”
“Approximately twelve million.”
Mariana’s eyes narrowed.
“That high?”
“Luxury purchases.”
The executive slid several documents toward her.
“Vehicles.”
Another page.
“Private aviation.”
Another.
“Jewelry.”
Mariana stopped.
“Jewelry?”
“Yes.”
The executive hesitated.
“Several purchases appear connected to Brenda Collins.”
Mariana stared at the page.
A diamond bracelet.
A Cartier watch.
A luxury apartment lease.
All paid through companies Mariana had quietly saved.
She almost laughed.
Andrew had used money originating from her family to finance his mistress.
Alejandro watched her.
“Do you want everything terminated?”
Mariana closed the folder.
“Everything that legally belongs to us.”
“And the mansion?”
Mariana looked up.
The room became silent.
The mansion.
Margaret’s beloved Whitmore Estate.
The house where Mariana had been insulted every morning.
The house where Andrew had ordered her to kneel.
The house he had called his.
“Who owns it?”
The attorney answered.
“Escalante Residential Trust.”
Mariana already knew.
She simply wanted to hear it aloud.
“Andrew’s company defaulted on the property eight months after your marriage.”
The attorney continued.
“You acquired the note privately and transferred ownership into the trust.”
Mariana nodded.
She remembered.
Andrew had cried that night.
Not in front of her.
Alone in his office.
He thought he was going to lose his family home.
Mariana had quietly saved it.
Then she had allowed him to believe he had solved the problem himself.
She had protected his pride.
For four years.
Now she understood that she had actually protected his arrogance.
“Send formal notice.”
Her attorney nodded.
“How much time?”
Mariana thought about Andrew pointing toward the floor.
Kneel.
Then she remembered Margaret laughing.
Crawl out.
“Seventy-two hours.”
Alejandro raised an eyebrow.
“Generous.”
“No.”
Mariana looked toward the window.
“It gives him enough time to understand what he lost.”
Her phone vibrated.
ANDREW.
Everyone noticed.
Mariana stared at the screen.
She let it ring.
Then stop.
Five seconds later, it rang again.
She declined it.
Alejandro smiled faintly.
“He knows.”
“Not yet.”
Mariana turned toward the conference table.
“He knows my last name.”
May you like
She sat down.
“By noon, I want him to understand what it means.”
