Chapter 3: The Secret Daniel Protected

I didn’t open the folder immediately.

For the first time in days, someone was standing in front of me who didn’t see me as a burden.

Someone who looked at me like I mattered.

Marcus sat beside the garage door.

“Daniel talked about you every day.”

I looked away.

“He did?”

Marcus smiled sadly.

“He carried your picture everywhere.”

My fingers tightened around the folder.

“Then why didn’t he tell me about this?”

“Because he was trying to protect you.”

I opened the folder.

The first document made my heart stop.

It was a legal document.

A property transfer.

Daniel had secretly purchased a house six months before his death.

A house.

For me.

For our baby.

I looked at Marcus in disbelief.

“He never told me.”

“He wanted it to be a surprise.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“He said his dream was to bring you home after his last deployment. He wanted your child to grow up somewhere safe.”

I looked toward the house where my family lived.

The house where they had thrown me into a garage.

And suddenly, I realized something.

I had been fighting to stay somewhere I was never truly wanted.

Marcus handed me another paper.

“This is why Daniel was worried.”

I read the document.

My face went pale.

It was a report about my family.

Not just their cruelty.

Their financial problems.

Andrew had lost his business.

Natalie and Andrew were drowning in debt.

And Daniel had discovered they had been planning to use my inheritance from his military benefits to save themselves.

“They knew about the money,” I whispered.

Marcus nodded.

“Daniel suspected they would try to control you.”

My hands trembled.

The realization was painful.

They didn’t want me.

They wanted what I had.

That afternoon, I walked into the house for the first time since the garage.

Everyone looked surprised.

Diane frowned.

“You’re back already?”

I calmly placed the folder on the table.

“I need my belongings.”

Natalie laughed softly.

“Claire, don’t make this dramatic.”

I looked directly at her.

For the first time, I wasn’t afraid.

“You knew about Daniel’s benefits.”

The room went silent.

Andrew’s expression changed.

Diane looked away.

That was all the answer I needed.

“You were never planning to help me,” I said quietly.

“You were waiting for me to disappear.”

My father stood up.

“Watch your tone.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

My voice was steady.

“After everything I lost, you don’t get to tell me how to speak.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody expected this version of me.

The woman who walked into that kitchen days ago was broken.

But the woman standing there now?

She was Daniel Hayes’ wife.

And she remembered who she was.

I picked up my bag.

“I’m leaving.”

Diane looked shocked.

“Where will you go?”

May you like

I touched Daniel’s dog tags.

“Somewhere my husband wanted me to be.”
