Chapter 12 - ROOM 214

State investigators took over.

Coach Bell disappeared.

Voss disappeared.

Officer Barnes was arrested.

Lyle was found two counties away.

Harlan still hadn’t returned to school.

Ridgeway High closed for “emergency administrative review.”

Nobody believed the official statement.

News vans filled the street.

Parents demanded answers.

Former students started calling reporters.

Then Maya remembered the key.

Room 214.

Police searched Harlan’s classroom twice.

Nothing.

Jake wasn’t satisfied.

“He knew we recorded him,” he said.

“He wouldn’t leave evidence in the open.”

Dylan looked at the ruler sitting inside a police evidence photo.

“The ruler.”

“What about it?”

“He always kept it in the same spot.”

“Desk drawer.”

“No.”

Dylan shook his head.

“On the wall.”

Maya frowned.

“So?”

“There were twelve hooks on that wall.”

Jake remembered.

Lab coats.

Safety goggles.

And one wooden ruler.

“Why hang a ruler there?”

They returned to the school with Investigator Shaw from the state attorney general’s office.

Room 214 smelled like dust and cleaning chemicals.

Maya stood beside the wall.

“There.”

Behind the ruler was a tiny keyhole.

The brass key fit perfectly.

CLICK.

A section of cabinet released.

Hidden compartment.

Inside were hundreds of envelopes.

Cash.

Checks.

Student records.

Photos.

And a black binder.

Maya opened it.

Names filled every page.

Not just students.

Teachers.

Police officers.

Judges.

Local businessmen.

Donations.

Favors.

Blackmail.

Jake whispered, “This isn’t a school scam.”

Shaw’s face darkened.

“No.”

“It’s a network.”

Shaw nodded.

Dylan looked through the pages.

Then stopped.

“Dad.”

Mark stepped closer.

Dylan pointed.

MARK COOPER.

Beside his father’s name:

STATUS: NONCOMPLIANT.

LEVERAGE: DYLAN.

Mark went pale.

Below it was another entry.

KELLY COOPER.

STATUS: WITNESS.

ACTION AUTHORIZED.

Kelly took a step back.

“Authorized by who?”

Jake turned the page.

At the top was a signature.

Not Voss.

Not Harlan.

Not Bell.

A name none of them expected.

THOMAS REYNOLDS.

Maya’s father.

Maya stared at the signature.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“No.”

Then someone slowly clapped from the doorway.

Thomas Reynolds stood there.

Behind him was Coach Bell.

May you like

Thomas smiled at his daughter.

“I was hoping you’d never find that.”
