Chapter 2 - WHAT THE CAMERA SAW

The video had no sound.

It didn’t need any.

The picture told the truth perfectly.

The timestamp read 5:42 p.m.

Maria appeared first.

She pushed Lily’s stroller into the hallway and stopped near the wall.

She locked both rear wheels.

I saw it clearly.

Click.

Click.

Then she bent down and picked up one of Lily’s toys.

Thirty seconds later, Maria walked into the kitchen.

The stroller didn’t move.

Vanessa entered the frame.

She looked toward the kitchen.

Then toward the stairs.

Then toward the camera.

My chest tightened.

“No,” I whispered.

Vanessa reached down.

Unlocked the first wheel.

Then the second.

Click.

Click.

She stood up.

Waited.

And gave the stroller a small push.

I stopped breathing.

On the video, the stroller rolled slowly across the hardwood floor.

Straight toward the stairs.

Vanessa watched it.

She didn’t scream.

She didn’t run.

She just watched.

Then Maria rushed into frame.

She threw herself across the floor.

Her shoulder slammed against the wall.

She grabbed the stroller handle with one hand.

The stroller tipped.

Maria caught Lily before she hit the floor.

Only then did Vanessa begin screaming.

I looked up from the phone.

Vanessa was backing away.

“Daniel, I can explain.”

I barely recognized my own voice.

“Explain what?”

“It isn’t what it looks like.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“Seriously?”

“Emma, stay out of this.”

“No.”

“Go upstairs.”

“She almost killed Lily!”

“I DID NOT!”

Vanessa screamed so loudly Lily started crying again.

I tightened my grip on my baby.

“Lower your voice.”

Vanessa’s face was wet with tears.

“I was trying to prove a point.”

I stared at her.

“What point?”

“That Maria is careless.”

Maria looked stunned.

“You pushed a baby toward stairs to prove I am careless?”

“I knew you were nearby!”

Maria stepped forward.

“You did not know anything.”

Vanessa pointed at her.

“You hate me.”

Maria gave a humorless smile.

“I did not hate you before today.”

Emma moved closer to me.

“Dad, there’s more.”

Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.

“What do you mean?”

Emma swallowed.

“I saw something weird last week. So I started saving clips from the cameras.”

Vanessa’s color drained.

I looked at Emma.

“What clips?”

She unlocked her phone again.

Vanessa reached for it.

I stepped between them.

“Don’t touch her.”

“Daniel—”

“I said don’t.”

For the first time, Vanessa stopped pretending to cry.

Her face hardened.

“I have done everything for this family.”

Maria muttered, “No. You have done everything to this family.”

Vanessa spun toward her.

“You shut your mouth.”

I felt something inside me turn over.

Because the woman standing in front of me wasn’t the woman I thought I knew.

I had been dating Vanessa for eleven months.

She was smart.

Funny.

Charming.

My friends liked her.

My mother adored her.

Even Emma had liked her at first.

But now?

Now I was looking at a stranger.

Emma tapped her phone.

“This one is from Tuesday.”

The video began.

Vanessa was standing outside Emma’s bedroom.

She looked around.

Then she opened the door.

Walked inside.

And didn’t come out for twenty minutes.

I looked at Emma.

“What was she doing in your room?”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“That’s what I was going to tell you.”

She took a breath.

“And Dad…”

May you like

Her voice cracked.

“My mom’s necklace is missing.”
