Chapter 4: A New Family

That night, Jake drove Megan straight to the hospital.

Doctors confirmed she had suffered multiple untreated soft-tissue injuries, severe bruising, dehydration, and dangerous emotional stress.

The baby, by some miracle, was still healthy.

When the police watched the security footage, they arrested Jake's mother before sunrise.

She was charged with assault on a pregnant woman, intimidation, and elder abuse-related domestic violence enhancements after investigators uncovered similar behavior toward another family member years earlier.

She never looked at Jake as officers led her away.

Jake changed every lock.

Destroyed the spare key.

Blocked every phone number connected to his mother.

Weeks later, Megan finally smiled again.

It happened on a quiet autumn afternoon when their son entered the world crying with a strength that filled the delivery room.

Jake held both of them close, tears streaming freely down his face.

"I'm so sorry," he whispered to Megan.

"I should have believed you from the beginning."

She gently squeezed his hand.

"You believe me now."

"That's what saved us."

Years later, their little boy would ask why Grandma was never in the family photographs.

Jake would smile, kiss his son's forehead, and answer honestly.

"Because family isn't the people who share your blood."

"It's the people who protect your heart."

And from that day forward, he made sure his wife and son never had to fear their own home again.
