Chapter 9 - The Kidnapping

AttemptI pulled Sophie behind me.
The voice came again.
“Sophie.”
She froze.
“That is Grandpa.”
A shadow moved through the smoke.
Detective Hale stepped forward.
“Stop where you are.”
The shadow raised something.
A gunshot struck the wall.
Everyone dropped.
The officers returned fire toward the ceiling as a warning.
Agent Bennett shoved open a service door leading into the parking structure.
“Move.”
We ran between parked vehicles.
Smoke followed us through the doorway.
A black SUV started at the far end of the garage.
Its headlights flashed.
The vehicle accelerated directly toward us.
Hale pushed Sophie and me behind a concrete pillar.
The SUV struck a patrol car.
Metal screamed.
Airbags exploded.
The driver reversed.
Then the rear passenger door opened.
My father stepped out.
He was holding a gun.
“Sophie, come here.”
She clung to my arm.
“No.”
My father’s expression twisted.
“This is your father’s fault.”
Agent Bennett aimed at him.
“Drop the weapon.”
He pointed the gun toward me.
“Give me the child.”
“She is not yours.”
“She carries our name.”
“She carries Emily’s name too.”
His face changed at the mention of her.
“Emily destroyed this family.”
“You destroyed her.”
My father’s hand trembled.
“She should have stayed out of my business.”
That sentence was heard by six officers.
It was recorded on every body camera.
Agent Bennett took one step closer.
“You just admitted involvement.”
He laughed.
“You think a few words matter?”
“They matter to Sophie.”
For the first time, he looked at my daughter.
She stared back with tears on her face.
“You hurt Mommy,” she whispered.
My father’s eyes widened.
Then another gunshot came from inside the SUV.
The bullet struck the concrete beside Bennett.
Chief Pierce leaned out through the broken window.
“Get in the vehicle,” he shouted.
My father grabbed the door.
Before he could enter, an unmarked police truck blocked the garage exit.
State officers surrounded the SUV.
Pierce fired again.
Officers returned fire.
The SUV’s tires burst.
My father dropped his weapon and raised his hands.
Pierce did not surrender.
He climbed through the opposite door and ran behind the parked cars.
Hale chased him.
Pierce reached the upper ramp.
A second vehicle waited there.
The driver was Dr. Caroline Reed.
She looked terrified.
Pierce pulled open the passenger door.
Before he could enter, Caroline accelerated.
The vehicle struck him and sent him across the pavement.
She did not stop.
Hale reached Pierce seconds later.
He was alive.
Barely.
Officers arrested my father again.
This time, he was taken to a state facility under armed guard.
As they led him away, he looked at me.
“You think this ends with me?”
I did not answer.
He smiled.
“Ask your mother who owns the judge.”
Then he disappeared into the police vehicle.
The comment spread panic through the investigation.
The family court judge had protected Sophie.
But another judge had signed the emergency psychiatric order.
Judge Martin Voss.
He had served with my father on a charity board for twelve years.
Financial investigators examined his accounts.
They found payments from one of my father’s consulting companies.
The custody petition had never been random.
The therapist.
The school counselor.
The police chief.
The judge.
Everyone had been positioned.
Every institution I trusted had been turned into a weapon.
Pierce survived surgery.
He agreed to speak in exchange for protection.
His first statement lasted three hours.
He admitted helping manipulate police reports.
He admitted paying witnesses.
He admitted ordering officers away from my parents’ house.
Then he made a claim no one expected.
“My brother Ryan has the full ledger.”
Agent Bennett frowned.
“We recovered the ledger.”
Pierce laughed weakly.
“You recovered the public ledger.”
“There is another one.”
“What is in it?”
“Names.”
“Judges.”
“Doctors.”
“Lawyers.”
“Politicians.”
“Everyone who bought a piece of the system.”
“Where is your brother?”
“I do not know.”
Pierce looked directly at me.
“But he knows where Daniel’s wife hid the second copy.”
My phone vibrated.
A photograph appeared from an unknown number.
It showed Sophie sleeping inside the protected apartment the night before the fire.
Someone had been inside our room.
May you like
Beneath the picture was a message.
Your father was never the one in charge.
