Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT HE COULD NOT EXPLAIN

Rafael began with the sentence guilty people use when they want the ending to erase the beginning.
“I never meant for it to go that far.”
We were in Mika’s conference room.
His own lawyer sat beside him.
Nobody had promised him anything.
“Then tell the truth,” I said.
He kept looking at the water glass.
“Cora said she was calling you. Bianca panicked.”
“You hit her.”
He nodded.
I felt my stomach turn.
“She fell against the counter,” he said. “She was awake. She was yelling.”
“And the clinic?”
“We told her she should get checked.”
“You brought her tea.”
His eyes lifted.
“She told you?”
“She’s alive, Rafael.”
Something in him gave way.
Not relief exactly.
More like a wall he had spent nineteen months leaning against had disappeared.
“I thought she was still there,” he whispered.
“At the clinic?”
“At the residence. Bianca handled the payments.”
“Under a false name.”
“I didn’t know about that part.”
Mika slid the admission authorization across the table.
His signature sat at the bottom.
“You knew enough to sign,” she said.
Rafael pressed his palms against his eyes.
He admitted that Cora had become weak and confused after the drink. He claimed Bianca had prepared it and that he hadn’t known what was in it.
We recorded the claim as a claim.
By then, I had learned how much damage lived inside the words I didn’t know.
He had helped move Cora.
He had told Daniel she quit.
He had blocked calls.
He had watched my mother become smaller.
That much required no chemical analysis.
“Why the uniform?” I asked.
His lawyer shifted.
Rafael looked confused by the question.
Of all the money, all the documents, that was what I wanted answered.
“Bianca said Mom needed structure.”
“And you?”
“I thought if she stayed busy—”
“She raised us.”
“I know.”
“She cleaned other people’s houses to feed us.”
“I know.”
“No. You remembered. That’s different.”
He began to cry.
I had wanted that once.
Now it did nothing for me.
That evening, he gave investigators the location of a storage unit Bianca rented.
Records were recovered through the appropriate process over the following days.
Inside were original documents, account statements, and my mother’s jewelry.
But Bianca herself was gone.
Then Daniel called.
“Someone just left a message for my aunt.”
He played it.
May you like
Bianca’s voice was calm.
“Ask Andrea what she thinks happens to Cora if that video isn’t the only one.”
