Chapter 3 - The Recording Behind the Wall

The room became silent except for the recorder.
Judith’s frightened voice came next.
“I want Tessa.”
Bryce’s recorded voice answered.
“Tessa does not want this responsibility.”
“She has her own life.”
“She barely calls.”
Tessa’s throat tightened.
Then Kendra’s voice played.
“Hold her wrist still.”
“She keeps moving.”
A scraping sound followed.
Judith whimpered.
“Please stop.”
Tessa looked at the bruises beneath the coat.
Every mark suddenly had a voice.
Bryce lunged for the recorder.
Tessa stepped back and raised the fireplace poker.
“Try it.”
His hands curled into fists.
“That recording was made without consent.”
“So was the deed.”
“You do not understand the law.”
“I understand your voice.”
Kendra pointed at Judith.
“She planned this.”
“She’s been manipulating all of us.”
Judith stared at her.
“I hid it because I thought you might kill me.”
The statement landed heavily.
Kendra’s face changed.
Not guilt.
Offense.
“How dare you?”
“How dare she?” Tessa shouted.
“You held down a seventy-eight-year-old woman and forced her to sign away her home.”
Bryce lowered his voice.
“Tessa, think carefully.”
“Our family name matters in this town.”
“You really want police cars outside?”
“You really want Mom questioned for hours?”
“You really want strangers examining her body?”
Tessa understood what he was doing.
He was turning the consequences of his actions into her responsibility.
“You should have thought about that before hurting her.”
“I never hurt her.”
The recorder continued playing.
A loud impact came through the speaker.
Judith cried out.
Bryce’s voice followed.
“Stop fighting me.”
Tessa’s eyes filled with tears.
She pressed pause.
“That was you.”
Bryce’s mouth tightened.
“She fell against the table.”
“After you grabbed her.”
“She became combative.”
“She was scared.”
Kendra stepped closer.
“You don’t know what she’s like now.”
“She wanders.”
“She lies.”
“She hides medication.”
“She accuses people.”
Judith looked at Tessa.
“They give me pills that make me sleep.”
Tessa turned back to Kendra.
“What pills?”
“Prescribed medication.”
“Show me.”
“They’re in the kitchen.”
Tessa pointed toward the doorway.
“Go get them.”
Kendra did not move.
“Now.”
Bryce shook his head.
“No one is ordering my wife around.”
Tessa took out her phone again.
“I’ll let the police do it.”
Bryce moved with sudden speed.
He slapped the phone from her hand.
It hit the hardwood floor.
The screen cracked.
Tessa stared at him.
For a second, Bryce seemed shocked by what he had done.
Then his eyes hardened.
“You are not calling anyone.”
Judith rose from the chair.
Her knees buckled.
Tessa caught her.
The movement pulled the coat open farther.
Dark bruises covered Judith’s ribs.
A raw red line circled one wrist.
Tessa saw something else.
A small plastic tube had been taped beneath the coat lining.
She pulled it free.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
Judith clutched Tessa’s sleeve.
“I wrote it when I was still awake enough.”
Tessa unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was shaky but readable.
It contained dates.
Amounts.
Names of medications.
Times Bryce and Kendra had taken Judith to the bank.
And one sentence underlined three times.
Bryce is stealing from the Fairhaven Children’s Trust.
Tessa looked up.
The Fairhaven Children’s Trust was not a family account.
It was a charitable fund created by their late father.
Bryce had managed it for twelve years.
It supported foster children, school meal programs, and emergency housing.
Tessa stared at her brother.
“You didn’t just steal from Mom.”
Bryce’s breathing changed.
Kendra’s face went white.
Judith leaned against Tessa.
“He used my account to hide it.”
Tessa looked at the notes again.
The amounts totaled more than two million dollars.
“You moved charity money through her bank account.”
Bryce took one step toward them.
“You need to give me that paper.”
Tessa folded it and slipped it into her blouse.
“No.”
“This is bigger than you understand.”
“It looks simple.”
“You stole money.”
Bryce’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“I said give it to me.”
The front door opened.
A man’s voice called from the hallway.
“Bryce?”
Kendra looked relieved.
Tessa did not recognize the voice.
A moment later, Dr. Nathan Fallon entered the den carrying a black medical bag.
He looked at Judith.
Then at Tessa.
Then at the recorder in her hand.
Bryce spoke first.
“Thank God you’re here.”
“She’s having another episode.”
May you like
Dr. Fallon opened his bag.
Tessa saw the syringe before he even removed it.
