Chapter 11 - THE ENEMY OF MY ENEMY

Marcus lowered his weapon slightly.
“You hired Jonah?”
Samuel nodded.
“After Richard found me.”
Alexander stared.
“You staged your own kidnapping?”
“No.”
Samuel coughed.
“That part was real.”
Jonah called from upstairs.
“Can we stop shouting through a floor?”
Marcus yelled back,
“Put your weapons down.”
Jonah laughed.
“You first.”
“Not happening.”
“Then we have a problem.”
Alexander looked at Marcus.
“I’m going up.”
“No.”
“He wants to talk.”
“He also shoots people.”
“So do you.”
Marcus frowned.
“Not helping.”
Alexander climbed the stairs with his hands visible.
Jonah stood in the kitchen.
Tall.
Gray jacket.
Scar over his eyebrow.
Three armed men waited behind him.
Jonah looked at Alexander.
“You’re taller than your father.”
Alexander stopped.
“You knew him?”
“No.”
“But you knew about him.”
“Yes.”
“Who are you working for?”
Jonah looked toward the basement.
“Samuel.”
Alexander glanced back.
Samuel slowly climbed the stairs with Marcus.
Marcus looked furious.
“You attacked my house.”
Jonah shrugged.
“I attacked a window.”
“You fired at my guards.”
“I fired near your guards.”
“One man got hit.”
“Ricochet.”
Marcus stepped forward.
Jonah smiled.
“There he is.”
“Try me.”
Samuel raised his voice.
“Enough.”
Everyone looked at him.
He leaned against the wall.
“I hired Jonah six months ago.”
“Why?” Alexander demanded.
“To investigate Richard.”
“Why not go to police?”
Samuel laughed.
“You think Richard survived thirty years by being afraid of police?”
Jonah pulled out a folder.
“He owns judges. Cops. City officials. Two federal contractors.”
Marcus took the folder.
“Proof?”
“Some.”
Alexander looked at Samuel.
“Then why scare Victoria?”
Samuel sighed.
“Because Victoria was the weak link.”
“You nearly got my mother killed.”
Samuel looked ashamed.
“I didn’t expect Victoria to hurt Evelyn.”
Alexander stepped close.
“You don’t get to say that.”
“I know.”
“My mother has broken ribs because you were playing spy games.”
“I know.”
Alexander grabbed Samuel by the jacket.
Marcus moved.
Samuel held up a hand.
“No. Let him.”
Alexander’s voice shook with rage.
“You all keep saying you did things to protect people. My mother lied to protect me. Richard controlled me to protect himself. Victoria used me because Richard told her to. Marcus spied on me because he wanted revenge. And now you tell me you set traps around my family because you wanted justice.”
He shoved Samuel back.
“I’m done being the last person in the room who knows what’s happening.”
Samuel nodded.
“Fair.”
Alexander turned to Jonah.
“What do you know?”
Jonah pulled a small drive from his pocket.
“Richard is planning to disappear.”
“When?”
“Forty-eight hours.”
“Where?”
“Private airfield.”
Alexander smiled coldly.
“Then we take him before he leaves.”
Jonah shook his head.
“Not that simple.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard’s not running from you.”
Alexander frowned.
“Then who?”
Jonah glanced at Samuel.
Samuel’s face tightened.
Jonah said,
“Someone else is coming for him.”
“Who?”
Jonah took a breath.
“Your father’s partner.”
Alexander went still.
“My father didn’t have a partner.”
Samuel whispered,
“Yes, he did.”
Alexander looked at him.
“Who?”
May you like
Samuel’s answer changed everything.
“Your mother.”
