Chapter 2: The Man Who Sold A Family Secret

Sarah sat inside Edward Whitmore’s private office, staring at documents spread across the massive wooden table.
Birth records.
Old photographs.
Letters.
Everything pointed to one impossible truth.
Her entire life had been built on a lie.
“You’re saying my father knew you?” Sarah whispered.
Edward nodded.
“Your father, Daniel Collins, was my closest friend.”
His voice softened.
“He saved my life once. When he died, his last request was that I protect you.”
Sarah looked down.
“Then why didn’t you find me?”
Edward’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because someone erased every trace of you.”
A detective placed a folder on the table.
“We found the original adoption records.”
Sarah opened the file.
Her hands began shaking.
The papers revealed that after her father’s death, someone had secretly changed her identity and moved her away.
Someone with access.
Someone powerful.
Then another document appeared.
A financial record.
A payment made twenty-five years ago.
The sender’s name made everyone in the room silent.
Mark’s father.
Sarah stared at the paper.
“No...”
Edward looked at her.
“Your husband’s family knew who you were.”
The truth hit harder than the slap outside the hotel.
Mark hadn’t just betrayed her marriage.
He had hidden her entire identity.
But why?
The answer came that evening.
Mark arrived at Edward’s mansion, pretending to be calm.
“You’re making a mistake,” Mark said.
Edward stood across from him.
“No. The mistake was thinking nobody would ever find out.”
Mark’s face changed.
“You have no idea what this family went through.”
Edward’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.”
Mark laughed bitterly.
“My father discovered who Sarah really was years ago. He knew she was connected to the Whitmore fortune and the charity foundation.”
Sarah stepped forward.
“So you married me because of my inheritance?”
Mark looked away.
That silence was the answer.
“You never loved me.”
Mark said nothing.
Because there was nothing left to defend.
Then Chloe walked into the room.
But she wasn't crying.
She wasn't afraid.
She was angry.
“Mark, you promised me she would never know.”
Everyone turned.
Sarah stared at her.
“You knew?”
Chloe smiled coldly.
“Of course I knew.”
The woman who had pretended to be a victim outside the hotel finally revealed her true face.
“The only reason you were still alive in that marriage was because we needed your signature.”
Sarah’s heart sank.
“What signature?”
Chloe smiled.
“The inheritance transfer.”
Edward immediately understood.
