Chapter 13 - THE DAUGHTER HENRY WARREN CHOSE

The rail vehicle moved beneath the mountain.
Its wheels screamed against old tracks.
Celeste watched Arthur carefully.
His left side continued bleeding.
He had lost more blood than he admitted.
His pistol remained steady.
That would not last forever.
“What did Henry want from me?” she asked.
Arthur smiled.
“Not from you.”
“For you.”
Celeste said nothing.
Arthur continued.
“Henry believed families should be engineered.”
“Not raised.”
“He studied loyalty.”
“Fear.”
“Trauma.”
“He believed certain children could become extraordinary if placed under the correct pressure.”
Celeste’s stomach tightened.
“You mean abuse.”
“He called it selection.”
“He watched Julian.”
“He found him emotional.”
“Dependent.”
“Easy to control.”
Arthur spoke about his son as though discussing a failed investment.
“Then Margaret became pregnant.”
“With Thomas Reed’s child.”
“Henry saw potential.”
“Military blood.”
“Margaret’s intelligence.”
“My resources.”
Celeste stared at him.
“You raised me as an experiment.”
“I raised you to be useful.”
“You humiliated me.”
“To remove vanity.”
“You isolated me.”
“To build independence.”
“You turned Julian against me.”
“To sharpen both of you.”
Celeste laughed quietly.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“What is amusing?”
“You still think you created me.”
“I did.”
“No.”
She leaned forward.
“You created the obstacles.”
“I became myself in spite of you.”
Arthur’s expression darkened.
The vehicle slowed.
They entered a wider tunnel filled with abandoned equipment.
A steel door waited at the end of the track.
Arthur stood.
“Get out.”
Celeste obeyed.
Beyond the door was an underground garage.
A black sedan waited.
Someone stood beside it.
Vivian.
Her wounded arm rested in a sling.
Isabelle sat in the back seat.
Celeste stopped.
Vivian looked ashamed.
Arthur smiled.
“You expected redemption.”
Vivian did not meet Celeste’s eyes.
Arthur gestured with his pistol.
“Give me the ledger.”
Vivian held the remaining black book.
She placed it on the hood of the car.
Arthur opened it.
He examined several pages.
“Complete?”
“Yes.”
“Where is Julian?”
Vivian’s face tightened.
“With the agents.”
Arthur looked disappointed.
“You chose your daughter over my son.”
Vivian finally looked at him.
“You never chose either of them.”
Arthur struck her with the back of his hand.
She fell against the car.
Isabelle screamed from inside.
Celeste moved.
Arthur aimed at her.
“Stay.”
Vivian wiped blood from her mouth.
The old Vivian might have hidden the injury.
This one looked directly at Arthur.
“I brought the ledger.”
“Release Isabelle.”
Arthur laughed.
“She is already with you.”
“Let us leave.”
“No.”
Vivian’s face changed.
“You promised.”
“I promised access.”
“Not freedom.”
Celeste looked at Vivian.
“Now you understand.”
Vivian’s eyes filled with hatred.
Not toward Celeste.
Toward Arthur.
He took the ledger.
Then he opened the rear door.
Isabelle recoiled.
Arthur grabbed her wrist.
Vivian stepped forward.
“Don’t.”
Arthur pulled Isabelle from the car.
“You will both come with me.”
“Why?”
“Because loyalty must be tested again.”
Vivian looked at Celeste.
A silent question passed between them.
Celeste gave the smallest shake of her head.
Not yet.
Arthur forced them into the sedan.
Celeste sat in front.
Vivian and Isabelle sat behind her.
Arthur drove.
The garage door opened onto a hidden road beyond the ridge.
Morning light filled the car.
Sirens sounded far away.
Arthur turned south.
“Where are we going?” Vivian asked.
“To the gala.”
Celeste looked at him.
“The gala is under federal control.”
“Not anymore.”
Arthur smiled.
“The raid ended when the supervising judge withdrew the warrant.”
Celeste remembered the names inside the ledger.
Judges.
Agents.
Officials.
Arthur still had pieces of the system.
“You called someone from the tunnel.”
“I called someone before the gala.”
“You knew the warrant was coming.”
“I wrote part of the evidence that created it.”
Celeste understood.
Arthur had triggered a controlled investigation.
He wanted Julian blamed.
He wanted the foundation publicly cleansed.
Then he intended to return as the wronged leader who exposed corruption inside his own organization.
The raid was not the fall of his empire.
It was a restructuring.
“You planned to sacrifice Julian,” Vivian said.
Arthur looked into the mirror.
“Julian was not strong enough to inherit.”
Vivian’s face twisted.
“He worshipped you.”
“That was his weakness.”
Isabelle reached for her mother’s hand.
Vivian held it.
Celeste watched them in the side mirror.
Vivian slowly moved her free hand toward the door handle.
Child lock.
Arthur noticed.
“Do not embarrass yourself.”
Vivian stopped.
The road curved beside a steep ravine.
Celeste looked toward Arthur’s wounded side.
His breathing had become shallow.
His grip on the wheel weakened for one second.
She moved.
Her hand struck his injured ribs.
Arthur shouted.
The car swerved.
Vivian covered Isabelle.
Arthur hit Celeste’s face with his elbow.
The sedan crossed the center line.
A truck horn screamed.
Arthur jerked the wheel.
They missed the truck.
The car crashed through a guardrail.
It stopped halfway over the ravine.
Metal groaned beneath them.
The front wheels hung above the drop.
No one moved.
Arthur’s pistol had fallen near the pedals.
Celeste reached down.
Arthur grabbed her hair.
Vivian kicked the back of his seat.
The car shifted forward.
Isabelle screamed.
“Stop moving!”
Celeste’s voice cut through the panic.
Everyone froze.
The sedan rocked.
A support post from the broken guardrail held the rear frame.
Arthur looked toward the gun.
So did Celeste.
It lay beneath the brake pedal.
The engine continued running.
Smoke rose from the hood.
Vivian whispered.
“What do we do?”
Celeste looked at the doors.
The rear passenger side faced the road.
The front faced open air.
“Vivian opens her door first.”
“She gets Isabelle out.”
Arthur laughed weakly.
“No one moves.”
Celeste looked at him.
“If the car falls, you die too.”
“I would rather die than lose.”
Vivian stared at him.
“That is the first honest thing you have said.”
Arthur reached toward the gun.
Celeste struck his hand.
The vehicle moved another inch.
The support post bent.
Vivian opened the rear door slowly.
She climbed onto the road.
Then she pulled Isabelle after her.
Arthur watched them escape.
His face filled with fury.
“Come back!”
Vivian held Isabelle tightly.
“No.”
Celeste remained inside.
Arthur reached for the gun again.
She trapped his wrist beneath her foot.
“You built your whole life around people coming back.”
“Margaret.”
“Thomas.”
“Julian.”
“Vivian.”
“Me.”
Celeste leaned closer.
“No one is coming back now.”
Arthur looked through the windshield at the ravine.
Then toward the road behind them.
Vivian and Isabelle were moving away.
Federal sirens grew louder.
Arthur smiled suddenly.
“You are still here.”
Celeste understood.
He intended to make her choose.
Escape and let him possibly survive.
Or stay and risk falling with him.
She released his wrist.
Then she opened her door.
The car shifted sharply.
Arthur grabbed her arm.
“You don’t leave me.”
Celeste pulled free.
The support post snapped.
The sedan slid forward.
Celeste threw herself onto the road.
Arthur reached through the open door.
His fingers caught the torn fabric of her gown.
For one second, he held her.
The same dress Vivian had ripped open in the ballroom now tore completely away from Arthur’s hand.
Celeste rolled onto the pavement.
The sedan fell.
It disappeared over the edge.
A distant crash echoed from the ravine.
Vivian approached slowly.
“Is he dead?”
Celeste looked over the edge.
The car rested against a tree far below.
Smoke surrounded it.
The driver’s door was open.
Arthur was not inside.
Celeste stared toward the forest.
A trail of blood led away from the wreck.
“He’s alive.”
A federal SUV stopped near them.
Agent Grant stepped out with Reed and Julian.
Emma remained in another vehicle.
Reed ran toward Celeste.
He saw the ravine.
“Arthur?”
“Escaped.”
Grant looked toward the blood trail.
“We’ll search the forest.”
Celeste shook her head.
“He isn’t running without a destination.”
She looked toward the black ledger lying on the road.
It had been thrown from the car.
Pages moved in the wind.
Julian picked it up.
A sealed envelope fell from the back cover.
Celeste opened it.
Inside was a photograph of the gala ballroom.
Taken from above.
A red circle had been drawn around the honor table.
Beneath the photograph were five words.
FINAL TRANSFER AT NOON TODAY.
Reed checked the time.
11:14 a.m.
Celeste looked toward the distant city.
Arthur was going back to the gala.
May you like
Not to hide.
To finish whatever the event had truly been created to accomplish.
