Chapter 13 - Iván’s Choice

Lucía raised her gun.

“Iván!”

He stepped down from the helicopter.

His side was bandaged.

His face was pale.

Vidal laughed.

“Look at that. The loyal dog came home.”

Iván ignored him.

Lucía kept her weapon aimed.

“What are you doing here?”

Iván looked at Vidal.

“Ending something I should’ve ended six years ago.”

Vidal raised his gun.

Iván was faster.

One shot.

Vidal’s weapon flew from his hand.

He screamed and grabbed his wrist.

Lucía rushed forward and kicked the gun away.

Marcos reached the roof seconds later.

“Everybody down!”

Iván lifted both hands.

“I’m done fighting.”

Lucía stared at him.

“You knew about my father.”

“Yes.”

“You watched Serrano kill him.”

“Yes.”

“You said nothing.”

Iván looked at her.

“I told myself Serrano would kill my family.”

“Did he threaten them?”

“Yes.”

“So you helped him instead.”

“Yes.”

No excuses.

That almost made Lucía angrier.

“Then years later you tried to kill me.”

Iván lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because when Serrano ordered me to stop you, I saw your father standing in front of me again.”

Lucía laughed bitterly.

“And your solution was to repeat the same crime?”

“I panicked.”

“You sabotaged a helicopter.”

“I know.”

“You stepped on my hand.”

“I know.”

She walked closer.

“I trusted you.”

Iván’s eyes were wet now.

“That’s the part I can’t fix.”

Cruz’s officers placed Vidal in restraints.

Marcos moved toward Iván.

“Turn around.”

Iván obeyed.

Then Vidal started laughing.

Everyone looked at him.

“You idiots still think Serrano is the top.”

Lucía froze.

“What did you say?”

Vidal smiled through the pain.

“Serrano is scared of Lázaro.”

Lucía remembered her father’s recording.

Look for the name Lázaro.

Cruz stepped forward.

“Who is Lázaro?”

Vidal shook his head.

“You’ll find out soon enough.”

Then a shot cracked across the roof.

Vidal jerked backward.

Blood appeared on his chest.

Marcos grabbed Lucía and pulled her down.

“Sniper!”

A second shot hit the wall.

Iván threw himself behind cover.

Cruz shouted into her radio.

“Find the shooter!”

Lucía crawled toward Vidal.

He was fading quickly.

“Who is Lázaro?”

Vidal smiled weakly.

Then whispered one name.

“Cruz.”

May you like

Lucía slowly turned her head.

Prosecutor Elena Cruz was standing ten feet away.
