CHAPTER 2: The Man Behind the Perfect Smile

For the next forty-eight hours, Jason became the most wanted man in the county.
Police searched hotels.
Checked airports.
Tracked his bank accounts.
But he disappeared completely.
Like he had planned everything.
And maybe he had.
Because when detectives investigated his background, they found something disturbing.
Jason wasn’t who everyone thought he was.
The successful businessman.
The perfect husband.
The polite neighbor.
It was all an act.
His previous marriage ended after his ex-wife filed a restraining order.
The reason?
She claimed he was controlling.
Manipulative.
Dangerous.
But the case was dismissed because she refused to testify.
Just like Sarah.
Just like everyone else.
Emily spent her first week recovering at my house.
She barely slept.
Every night, she woke up screaming.
“Daddy!”
I would run into her room.
She would grab onto me.
And every time she apologized.
“I’m sorry.”
The first time she said it, I couldn’t understand.
“Sorry for what?”
She looked ashamed.
“For making trouble.”
Those words hurt more than anything Jason had done.
Because he didn’t just hurt her body.
He made her believe she was the problem.
I held her and whispered:
“You didn’t make trouble, Emily.”
“You survived.”
One afternoon, Detective Miller came to my house.
He brought a folder.
“We found something interesting.”
Inside were financial records.
Jason had been stealing money.
Not just from Sarah.
From several people.
Including elderly clients from his company.
“He wasn’t just hiding abuse,” Detective Miller explained.
“He was preparing to disappear.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
The detective placed another document on the table.
“Because Jason knew someone was investigating him.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
The detective looked at Emily’s bedroom.
“Your daughter.”
Apparently, Emily had accidentally discovered files on Jason’s computer.
She found names.
Money transfers.
Documents.
She didn’t understand everything.
But she knew something was wrong.
That was why Jason became afraid.
He didn’t lock her away because she lied.
He locked her away because she knew the truth.
Three days later, Sarah finally told me everything.
She admitted Jason changed after they married.
At first, he was charming.
Then controlling.
Then cruel.
“He convinced me you were trying to take Emily away from me,” she whispered.
“He made me believe everyone was against us.”
I stared at her.
“And you believed him.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.”
For the first time, Sarah wasn’t defending herself.
She was admitting she failed.
“I should have protected her.”
I looked away.
Because I knew she was right.
That night, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
Silence.
“Hello?”
A voice finally spoke.
Jason.
“Your daughter always was smarter than I expected.”
My entire body froze.
“Where are you?”
A quiet laugh.
“You think this ends because you found the cage?”
I looked toward Emily’s room.
My heart started racing.
“What did you do?”
Jason whispered:
May you like
“You still don’t know what was in the pool.”
The call ended.
