Chapter 14 - THE FALL OF THE WHITMORES

The news broke before sunset.

WHITMORE MEDICAL EXECUTIVES TARGETED IN FEDERAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

Then:

CEO’S SON ARRESTED AFTER WESTCHESTER HOSTAGE INCIDENT.

Then:

FORMER FIANCÉE ALLEGES PRIOR ABUSE BY WHITMORE HEIR.

By 8:00 p.m., every major business network in the country had Richard Whitmore’s face on television.

Meredith was charged first with obstruction, witness intimidation, and conspiracy tied to the charity transactions.

Paige was detained after agents caught her trying to access an offshore account from a laptop in a hotel bathroom.

Grant was charged with kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment, weapons offenses, and later, additional charges connected to Claire.

Richard was not arrested that night.

That surprised everyone.

Including me.

At 9:17 p.m., Maya and I sat inside a quiet conference room at her law firm.

I had changed clothes.

Washed the blood from my lip.

Taken a long look at myself in the mirror.

The woman staring back didn’t look powerful.

She looked exhausted.

I liked her anyway.

Maya handed me tea.

“You should sleep.”

“I don’t think my body remembers how.”

“You’ve been awake almost forty hours.”

“My wedding was yesterday.”

“I know.”

I laughed.

Then I started crying.

Not gracefully.

Not one perfect movie tear.

I broke.

My shoulders shook.

I covered my face and sobbed for the wedding I thought I had.

For my father.

For Claire.

For Rosa.

For myself.

Maya sat beside me without saying anything.

After a while, I whispered, “I feel stupid.”

“Don’t.”

“I married him.”

“You married the person he worked very hard to pretend to be.”

“I should’ve known.”

“You did know.”

I looked at her.

“That’s why you investigated.”

She was right.

Part of me had known.

Maybe not about the violence.

But about the lie.

Something inside me had kept pulling at the loose thread.

And eventually, the whole costume came apart.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I opened it.

Elena, this is Richard. I have entered a cooperation agreement. Before you hear it from someone else, there is something you need to know about your father.

My breath stopped.

Another message arrived.

His death was not connected to Whitmore Medical. I swear that to you.

I hadn’t even considered that.

Until he said it.

Maya saw my face.

“What?”

I handed her the phone.

She read it.

Then a third message arrived.

But David did leave something for you with me. I should have given it to you years ago.

My hands turned cold.

“What could my father have left with Richard?”

Maya stared at the screen.

“I don’t know.”

The next morning, under supervision from federal investigators, Richard’s attorney delivered a sealed envelope.

On the front was my father’s handwriting.

For Elena, if the Whitmores ever forget what kind of people they promised to become.

I sat down before opening it.

May you like

Inside was a letter.

And one final document that would decide what happened to the company.
