Chapter 10: The Bride’s Confession

Cassandra was missing for fourteen hours.
Preston claimed she had become emotional and disappeared.
My mother, released pending investigation, told reporters that Cassandra had been manipulated by me.
My father stood beside her outside the courthouse.
“This family is being targeted by a disturbed woman,” he said.
Sophie lay in a hospital bed with a fractured skull.
Cassandra had vanished.
Yet my father stood before cameras and called me dangerous.
The story spread across Chicago.
Some headlines called Preston a monster.
Others called me an unstable sister seeking revenge.
Then a video appeared online.
It showed me shouting inside the ballroom.
The moments before and after had been removed.
Only my anger remained.
The caption read:
MENTALLY ILL MOTHER ATTACKS FAMILY AT WEDDING
Within an hour, strangers were debating whether I should lose custody.
That was the cruelty of a lie.
It did not need to be perfect.
It only needed to arrive first.
That evening, a hospital aide handed me an envelope.
“No name,” she said. “A woman left it downstairs.”
Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten note.
Play this only with police present. — C
Detective Ortiz connected the drive to an isolated laptop.
Cassandra appeared on the screen.
Her hair was disheveled.
A bruise darkened one side of her face.
“If you’re watching this,” she said, “Preston found out I copied the trust documents.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“Evelyn, I’m sorry.”
I felt no comfort.
Only attention.
“I knew Preston wanted guardianship of Sophie. He told me it was temporary. He said your father was trying to protect the company from instability.”
Her voice broke.
“I believed him because I wanted the life he promised me.”
She closed her eyes briefly.
“But three days before the wedding, I overheard Preston and his father discussing an accident.”
My stomach tightened.
“They said once Preston controlled the trust, Sophie would no longer be necessary.”
Detective Ortiz paused the video.
“What did she mean?”
I already knew.
They had never planned to keep Sophie.
They planned to use her.
Then remove her.
Ortiz restarted the recording.
“Preston keeps copies of everything inside a hidden room beneath Whitmore Capital’s executive floor. The access code is Sophie’s birthday.”
Cassandra leaned closer to the camera.
“He has recordings of your father paying judges, doctors, and police officers.”
She looked over her shoulder.
A sound came from outside the room.
Her face filled with fear.
“One more thing.”
She held up a document.
It was a life insurance policy.
Sophie’s name appeared at the top.
The beneficiary was listed as the Whitmore Family Trust.
Coverage amount:
Twenty-five million dollars.
Cassandra whispered, “The policy becomes active on Sophie’s ninth birthday.”
