Chapter 6 - A DEAD MAN’S WARNING

At 3:17 a.m., Ethan watched his father speak for the first time in eight years.

Charles Blackwood appeared older than Ethan remembered.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

He sat behind the desk in the old headquarters library.

A date glowed in the corner of the recording.

Two days before his death.

Charles looked directly into the camera.

“If this recording is being watched, then I was either wrong about Vincent Hale…”

He paused.

“…or I did not get the chance to stop him.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Charles opened a ledger.

“For three years, I have tracked irregular transfers through development funds controlled by outside fiduciary accounts.”

“The losses are larger than they appear.”

“Money is being removed, routed through legal settlements, nursing-care companies, court-appointed guardianships, and shell corporations.”

Ethan glanced toward Agent Beck.

She was taking notes.

Charles continued.

“Vincent believes I suspect embezzlement.”

“He is wrong.”

“I believe this is acquisition.”

Ethan frowned.

Charles leaned closer to the camera.

“Someone is quietly obtaining control of vulnerable shareholders.”

“Not just their money.”

“Their voting rights.”

Margaret whispered.

“My shares.”

Charles continued as if answering her.

“The Blackwood trust is one target.”

“There are others.”

He named three family companies Ethan recognized.

Two had collapsed after sudden ownership disputes.

One had been sold to Northstar-linked investors.

Charles looked exhausted.

“I do not yet know who sits above Vincent.”

“But I know he is not the top.”

Vanessa slowly lifted her head.

Agent Beck noticed.

Charles turned a page.

“I copied every transfer I could verify.”

“I also recorded every meeting Vincent attended using our corporate visitor network.”

“If I die unexpectedly, do not let Vincent administer my personal trust.”

Margaret began crying silently.

Ethan felt a painful pressure behind his ribs.

Vincent had administered it.

They had done exactly what Charles warned against.

The video continued.

“My son will want to confront him.”

Ethan almost laughed.

Even dead, his father knew him.

“Do not.”

“Evidence first.”

“Anger later.”

Ethan lowered his head.

Margaret touched his arm.

Charles looked directly into the camera.

“Ethan, if this reaches you, remember something.”

“Trust is not weakness.”

“But trust without verification is an invitation.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Agent Beck opened one of the ledgers.

“These transactions match the offshore accounts we found tonight.”

“How far back?”

“Fifteen years.”

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“You said Vincent introduced us.”

She nodded.

“Who introduced Vincent to you?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Judge Wells.”

Agent Beck looked up sharply.

“What?”

“My father’s debt.”

“It wasn’t originally Vincent’s.”

“It belonged to an investment group.”

“Which one?”

Vanessa looked frightened.

“Northstar.”

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

Agent Beck leaned toward her.

“Who did your father borrow from?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“He only met them once.”

“Who?”

Vanessa’s hands trembled.

“A woman.”

“What woman?”

“I never knew her real name.”

Ethan’s patience snapped.

“Then tell us the name she used.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Eleanor.”

Margaret went still.

Completely still.

Ethan noticed immediately.

“Mom?”

Margaret’s face had gone white.

“What?”

“Do you know that name?”

Margaret stared at Vanessa.

“How old was she?”

Vanessa frowned.

“Maybe sixty.”

“Silver hair?”

“Yes.”

Margaret’s hands started shaking.

Ethan crouched beside her.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“I know who she is.”

Agent Beck stepped closer.

“Who?”

Margaret swallowed.

“Eleanor Vale.”

Ethan had never heard the name.

Margaret had.

“She was your father’s first business partner.”

“Before Blackwood Holdings existed.”

Ethan stared at her.

“What happened?”

“They built the company together.”

“Then Charles discovered she was stealing.”

“He forced her out.”

“When?”

“Thirty years ago.”

Ethan looked toward his father’s frozen image on the screen.

Vincent had been involved for seventeen years.

But the motive was older.

Much older.

Margaret whispered.

“Eleanor told Charles she would take everything from him one day.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“She didn’t want his money.”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

“She wanted his name erased.”

Agent Beck’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Where?”

A pause.

“Don’t approach.”

She ended the call.

“We found Vincent.”

Ethan stood.

“Where?”

“At Judge Wells’s house.”

Vanessa looked terrified.

Agent Beck continued.

“But Wells isn’t there.”

“Where is he?”

“We don’t know.”

Then Vanessa whispered.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

“He’s going to Redwood Gardens.”

Margaret stared at her.

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“There’s a records room beneath the east wing.”

“If they know the investigation is exposed, they’ll destroy everything.”

Claire looked at Agent Beck.

“My former patient’s records could be there.”

Agent Beck was already moving.

By sunrise, federal agents were heading toward Redwood Gardens.

And somewhere inside that quiet care facility, seventeen years of secrets were waiting to disappear.
