Chapter 2 — The Daughter He Never Knew

The words hung in the air like an explosion no one could outrun.
"Your daughter is asleep in the next room."
For several seconds, the soldier couldn't breathe.
"My... daughter?" he whispered.
The man in the blue shirt nodded.
"Her name is Lily."
His wife wiped away her tears with trembling hands.
"I found out I was pregnant three weeks after you deployed."
He stared at her in disbelief.
"You never told me."
"I tried."
She pointed toward the unopened military envelopes.
"I wrote back to every address you gave me. Every letter came back marked undeliverable. Then the military notified me that your convoy had disappeared."
His stomach tightened.
"They told me you were missing in action."
"They told me you were probably dead."
Silence swallowed the room.
The man in blue finally opened the folder.
"My name is Daniel Foster."
"I'm not your wife's partner."
"I'm her attorney."
He slid several documents across the coffee table.
Military reports.
Insurance records.
Death certificates.
One document froze the soldier where he stood.
Official Status: Killed in Action.
His own name stared back at him.
"They declared you dead fourteen months ago," Daniel said quietly.
"Legally, your wife became a widow."
The soldier slowly sat down.
He had survived the battlefield...
Only to discover the government had buried him while he was still breathing.
At that moment, tiny footsteps echoed from the hallway.
A little girl with messy dark hair rubbed her sleepy eyes while hugging a worn stuffed rabbit.
She couldn't have been older than eighteen months.
She looked directly at him.
Then tilted her head.
"Mommy..."
His wife turned around.
"Lily, sweetheart, you should be in bed."
But the little girl ignored her.
Instead, she walked slowly toward the stranger in camouflage.
May you like
She reached out one tiny hand.
And wrapped her fingers around his weathered military jacket.
