Chapter 1 - THE DAY HE CAME HOME

Staff Sergeant Cole Mercer had imagined his homecoming a hundred different ways.

None of them looked like this.

His duffel bag was still hanging from one shoulder when he stepped through the front door of the small Virginia house he shared with his wife.

He had been gone for seven months.

Seven months of sleeping in temporary quarters.

Seven months of eating meals while staring at photographs of the woman waiting for him at home.

Seven months of counting down the days until he could finally put his hand against her pregnant belly and feel their daughter move.

Cole had told almost no one he was coming home early.

He wanted it to be a surprise.

It was.

Just not the kind he had planned.

“Emily?”

His voice traveled through the quiet house.

No answer.

Then he heard something upstairs.

A chair scraping.

A woman whispering.

And another voice.

Male.

Cole dropped his duffel beside the stairs.

“Emily?”

This time, footsteps answered him.

His wife appeared at the top of the staircase.

Cole stopped breathing.

Emily Mercer was seven months pregnant.

She was wearing gray sweatpants and an oversized cream sweater.

Her dark hair was pulled into a loose knot.

She looked thinner than she had on their last video call.

But that wasn't what made Cole freeze.

It was her arm.

Emily had been tugging her sleeve downward when she saw him.

She wasn't fast enough.

Four fresh scratches ran across the inside of her forearm.

Red.

Angry.

Recent.

Cole slowly looked at her face.

Her eyes were swollen.

“Cole?”

The sound of his name nearly broke in her throat.

For half a second, neither of them moved.

Then Emily rushed down the stairs.

Cole caught her carefully.

She buried her face against his chest.

“You're home.”

“I’m home.”

Her entire body trembled.

Cole held her tighter.

Then he looked over her shoulder.

Three people were standing in the hallway upstairs.

The first was Emily's father.

Richard Hale.

Sixty-two years old.

Former county administrator.

Respected.

Connected.

A man who had spent twenty years making sure everyone in town knew exactly how respectable the Hale family was.

Beside him stood a woman Cole had never seen before.

She appeared to be in her late fifties.

Her blond hair was disheveled.

She wore a navy robe over what looked like pajamas.

And behind both of them stood a uniformed police officer.

Officer Daniel Ruiz.

Cole knew him.

They had gone to high school together.

Ruiz looked uncomfortable.

Very uncomfortable.

Cole's eyes returned to Emily's arm.

“Who did this to you?”

Emily immediately pulled her sleeve down.

“I tried to hide it.”

Her voice cracked.

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

Richard stepped forward.

“Sir, I can explain.”

Cole pulled Emily closer.

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't threaten anyone.

He simply looked at Richard.

“No.”

Richard stopped.

Cole looked at his wife.

“Did someone hurt you?”

Emily couldn't answer.

That was enough.

Cole turned toward Ruiz.

“Officer.”

Ruiz straightened.

“Staff Sergeant.”

“Why are you in my house?”

Ruiz glanced toward Richard.

That tiny movement told Cole something immediately.

Whatever was happening here, Emily's father was at the center of it.

Richard tried again.

“Cole, this is a family matter.”

Cole's expression changed.

“My wife is my family.”

Silence.

The woman in the robe suddenly spoke.

“Richard, tell him.”

Richard turned sharply.

“Carol, don't.”

Emily stiffened in Cole's arms.

Cole noticed.

He looked at his wife.

“You know her?”

Emily nodded.

“Who is she?”

Before Emily could answer, Carol stepped forward.

“My name is Carol Bennett.”

She looked directly at Cole.

“And Richard Hale has spent twenty-eight years making sure your wife never knew I existed.”

Richard went pale.

Emily closed her eyes.

Cole felt her fingers tighten around his shirt.

Then Carol said the sentence that changed everything.

“I'm Emily's mother.”

Cole looked at Richard.

Emily whispered against his chest.

“The woman who raised me wasn't my mother.”

And suddenly, Cole understood.

May you like

Those scratches weren't the beginning of what had happened inside this house.

They were only the first thing he had seen.
