Chapter 1: The Day Marcus Chose His Real Family

The house was silent after Brenda and Rachel left.
For the first time in days, Maya could hear something other than criticism.
No complaining.
No demands.
No footsteps of people who came into her home but never lifted a finger to help.
She sat on the edge of the couch, holding Lily close while their daughter slept peacefully after finally receiving her medicine.
Marcus sat beside her.
His anger was gone.
What remained was guilt.
âI should have seen it sooner,â he whispered.
Maya looked at him.
âYou didnât know.â
âI should have.â
His voice cracked slightly.
âYou were pregnant. You were taking care of Lily. And my mother was sitting ten feet away watching you struggle.â
Maya looked down at her hands.
âI didnât want to make you choose between me and your family.â
Marcus turned toward her.
âMaya, listen to me.â
He gently took her hand.
âYou and Lily are my family.â
Those words broke something inside her.
For weeks, she had been trying to be strong.
Trying to avoid conflict.
Trying to convince herself that everything was fine.
But she wasnât fine.
She was exhausted.
She was lonely.
And she had been afraid that speaking up would make Marcus think she was the problem.
The next morning, Marcus received a phone call.
It was his lawyer.
The estate situation with his mother was more complicated than he expected.
For years, Brenda had controlled a family trust created by Marcusâs grandfather.
She had always used it as a weapon.
Whenever Marcus disagreed with her, she reminded him:
âYou wouldnât have anything without this family.â
But Marcus had already made his decision.
He was done being controlled.
That afternoon, Brenda called.
Marcus answered on speaker.
âYou embarrassed me yesterday,â she said immediately.
No apology.
No concern about Lily.
No question about Maya.
Only herself.
âYou threw me out of your house like I was a stranger.â
Marcus looked at Maya sitting nearby.
Then at Lily playing quietly on the floor.
âYou werenât thrown out because you were my mother.â
A pause.
âYou were thrown out because you watched my pregnant wife struggle and did nothing.â
Brenda scoffed.
âMaya is too sensitive. Women today donât know how to handle responsibilities.â
Marcusâs expression hardened.
âStop.â
The word was calm.
But final.
âYou donât get to disrespect my wife anymore.â
Brenda lowered her voice.
âBe careful, Marcus. The trust fund can disappear.â
Marcus smiled slightly.
âActually, MomâŠâ
He opened the folder on his laptop.
âThatâs exactly why Iâm calling.â
Brenda went silent.
âThe legal documents are already being changed.â
âWhat?â
âThe trust was created to support family. Not to give one person power over everyone else.â
For the first time, Brenda sounded nervous.
âYou wouldnât do that.â
Marcus looked at his daughter.
Then at Maya.
May you like
âYes.â
âI would.â
