Chapter 3 - The Truth My Daughter Was Forced To Carry

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not for one second.

I sat on the couch with every light in the house turned on.

Lily slept beside me.

Noah stayed awake in his room.

None of us felt safe.

Not anymore.

At 6:30 in the morning, I called my best friend, Mark.

He arrived twenty minutes later.

One look at my face and he knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

I didn’t answer.

I just showed him the pictures.

The empty plates.

The stained dress.

The bruises on Lily’s wrist from where someone had grabbed her too tightly.

Mark’s expression changed.

“Who did this?”

“My mother-in-law.”

He stared at me.

“You’re serious?”

“I wish I wasn’t.”

Mark shook his head.

“You need to report this.”

“I know.”

But before I could call anyone, Lily came into the room.

“Daddy?”

I turned.

“Hey, baby.”

She held a small box.

“What’s that?”

“Grandma’s.”

My eyebrows tightened.

“Where did you get it?”

“She told me to hide it.”

My heart started pounding.

“What’s inside?”

Lily opened the box.

Inside were papers.

Photos.

And a small notebook.

I picked it up.

The first page had my name written on it.

Not my full name.

Just:

“Things he doesn’t know.”

My hands went cold.

I flipped the page.

There were dates.

Times.

Notes.

My schedule.

Where I went.

When I came home.

Who I talked to.

Someone had been tracking me.

For months.

Mark looked over my shoulder.

“Man…”

I kept reading.

Then I saw something that made my entire body go numb.

A photo.

A picture of me leaving work.

Another of Lily at school.

Another of Noah playing outside.

This wasn’t just Diane being cruel.

This was planned.

I turned the page.

And there was one sentence written in bold:

“Once he loses custody, everything belongs to us.”

My breathing stopped.

“What custody?”

Mark looked at me.

“Your ex?”

I shook my head.

“I don’t have an ex.”

Then Lily whispered:

“Grandma said Daddy would lose us.”

I slowly turned toward her.

“What did she mean?”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said nobody would believe you.”

My fists tightened.

Someone was trying to take my children.

But why?

Then my phone buzzed.

A text message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“You should have let Diane stay.”

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

“You just made your biggest mistake.”

Then a final message came.

A picture.

My house.

Taken from across the street.

From that morning.

May you like

Someone was outside.

Watching.
