Chapter 6 - THE APPOINTMENT

Daniel at Hearthstone sounded confused when I told him I had never requested a meeting.

“Mr. Ellison scheduled it,” he said.

“Mr. Ellison is my son. I’m the owner.”

There was a short silence. “Then I apologize. I’ll cancel it immediately.”

I asked him to email me everything his company had received. Helen would want to see it.

Matthew rubbed his forehead. “I called for a valuation. That’s all.”

“Then why did he think he was meeting me about a sale?”

“I don’t know.”

Jessica took her coat from the hook. “Because people in sales hear what they want to hear.”

She left before I could ask her another question.

The next morning, Helen arrived with a folder under one arm. Matthew had gone to work. Jessica’s car was in the driveway, but she stayed upstairs.

Daniel’s email contained a draft listing agreement and notes from two calls. According to the notes, the family planned to sell the house in January and use the proceeds to purchase a smaller place for me and pay off Matthew and Jessica’s debts.

“A smaller place for me?” I said.

Helen pointed to the last line. “Who told them that?”

I knew who hadn’t.

Helen helped me change passwords and document the bank transfer. We also asked the bank to check whether any other devices had accessed my account. I changed the house alarm code while she was there.

“I’d like them out today,” I said.

“Then tell them plainly and give them the notice I’ve prepared,” Helen said. “If they refuse, we’ll follow the required process.”

I read the notice twice. It stated that I had not invited them to live in the house and wanted them to remove their belongings. Helen had made it clear enough that even Jessica could not pretend she misunderstood.

At noon, Louise called.

“Tell me the whole thing,” she said.

So I did. I told her about the bedroom, the money, and the proposed sale.

“I can drive up,” she said.

“You’ve barely been out of bed.”

“I can sit in your kitchen and be mean to people.”

Despite everything, I laughed. “Stay home and get well.”

When I hung up, I heard a sound from the garage. Cardboard scraped concrete.

I went to the kitchen door and found Jessica loading boxes into her car. My decorations were in them.

“What are you doing?”

“Making room so we can move our own stuff.”

“Those boxes are mine.”

She shut the trunk. “I’m taking them to storage.”

“You never asked me.”

She gripped the car keys. “You can’t fit all this junk in here with our furniture.”

“Our furniture is leaving.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Matthew isn’t going anywhere.”

I put my hand on the trunk. “Open it.”

For a moment, I thought she might refuse.

Then I saw the corner of a blue quilt caught beneath the lid.

George’s quilt was in her car.
