Chapter 12 - THE CHILD IN MATEO’S NAME

The private hospital occupied three glass towers in central Mexico City.
Dr. Montalvo had entered through the emergency entrance.
He carried an infant beneath a white blanket.
By the time police reached the hospital, he had disappeared.
The second child remained in a treatment room.
The baby was alive.
He had been abandoned without identification.
Sofía examined him.
“He is not sick.”
Elena looked at the duplicate records.
“Then why register him as Mateo?”
“To create a second medical history.”
Dr. Marín compared the digital files.
“One profile shows Mateo recovering.”
“The other shows respiratory failure.”
Valeria held her son tightly.
“They planned to declare him dead.”
Nicolás looked toward the abandoned infant.
“Whose child is that?”
No one knew.
Sofía noticed a hospital bracelet hidden beneath the blanket.
The printed name had been scratched away.
A number remained.
Elena traced it to a charity clinic funded by the Velasco Children’s Foundation.
Leonor closed her eyes.
“Adrián controlled the clinic’s accounts.”
“He did more than control the money,” Sofía said.
“He had access to vulnerable families.”
The baby’s mother was found two hours later.
She was an eighteen-year-old woman named Marisol.
Dr. Montalvo had told her that her son needed emergency heart surgery.
He promised free treatment.
Then he took the child.
Marisol entered the room crying.
Sofía placed the baby in her arms.
“He is healthy.”
Marisol looked confused.
“The doctor said he would die.”
“The doctor lied.”
Nicolás watched the reunion.
The consequences of his family’s power were no longer hidden inside balance sheets.
They were crying in a hospital chair.
He called Elena aside.
“Use everything.”
“What do you mean?”
“Every financial record.”
“Some of those records may implicate you.”
“Then investigate me too.”
Elena studied him.
“That is not how men in your position usually speak.”
“My position almost buried two children.”
He looked toward Mateo.
“I am finished protecting it.”
Back at the mansion, the family chapel was searched.
The vault beneath the floor contained the original trust agreement.
It also contained ledgers documenting hundreds of millions of pesos stolen through children’s charities, medical suppliers, and private security contracts.
Every path led to Adrián.
Several carried Mauricio’s signature.
Others carried Dr. Montalvo’s.
Three carried Leonor’s.
“I never approved those transfers,” she said.
Elena looked at her.
“You approved enough real ones to make the forgeries believable.”
Leonor sat in a chapel pew.
For the first time, she looked old.
“What happens to me?”
Valeria answered.
“What happened to Mateo did not begin when Adrián changed the bottle.”
Leonor looked at her.
“It began when you decided his pain was useful.”
Nicolás found a sealed envelope inside the vault.
It was addressed to him in his father’s handwriting.
He opened it.
The letter warned that Adrián had been manipulating trust accounts for years.
Nicolás’s father had intended to remove him.
He died before the board meeting.
The official cause had been a heart attack.
Sofía saw Nicolás read the final line twice.
If anything happens to me, do not trust Rafael Montalvo.
Nicolás folded the letter.
“Adrián killed my father.”
Elena took the document.
“We do not know that yet.”
“We know Montalvo treated him.”
“We need proof.”
The chapel phone rang.
Only one person knew that number.
Nicolás answered.
Adrián’s voice came through.
“Did you enjoy your father’s final warning?”
“Where is Montalvo?”
“Preparing the medical documents.”
“Mateo is alive.”
“Until midnight.”
“You cannot reach him.”
Adrián laughed.
“I do not need to.”
“What do you want?”
“Sign the merger papers.”
“No.”
“Then tomorrow morning, the board receives proof that you stole from your own charity.”
“The records are forged.”
“Truth is whatever survives the first headline.”
Nicolás looked at Sofía.
She shook her head slightly.
Keep him talking.
Adrián continued.
“You will lose the company.”
“You will lose Mateo’s trust.”
“And when the police finish tearing apart your empire, your son will grow up carrying your disgrace.”
Nicolás’s voice remained steady.
“Come to the mansion.”
“Why would I?”
“Because I will sign only after I see the original medical records.”
Silence followed.
Then Adrián answered.
“Midnight.”
The call ended.
Elena looked at Nicolás.
“You invited him into the house.”
“No.”
May you like
Sofía looked toward the empty nursery.
“We invited him into a trap.”
