Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE

Nora wanted Elena hidden in a federal safe location.
Elena refused.
“I need proof.”
“You need to stay alive.”
“I’ve spent eleven years living with a man who built a fake life around me. I’m done hiding from what’s mine.”
Rachel looked at her sister.
“What are you thinking?”
“The house.”
Nora shook her head immediately.
“No.”
“Daniel keeps everything.”
“We searched it.”
“You searched what he wanted you to find.”
Elena knew the house better than Daniel thought.
Especially his office.
Years earlier, before they renovated, there had been a utility access panel behind a built-in bookcase.
Daniel had insisted the contractor leave it.
At the time, he said it was for wiring.
Now Elena wondered.
At 3:00 a.m., they entered the house.
No lights.
No sirens.
Nora and two trusted officers went first.
Elena followed.
The place felt different.
Not like home.
Like a crime scene pretending to be one.
She passed their wedding photograph.
Daniel smiling.
Elena laughing.
She stopped.
Rachel touched her shoulder.
“Don’t.”
Elena turned the picture facedown.
In Daniel’s office, she moved books from the lower shelf.
Found the latch.
The panel opened.
Behind it sat a small steel box.
Rachel whispered, “Oh my God.”
Nora photographed everything before opening it.
Inside were passports.
Cash.
A second phone.
Three flash drives.
And a folder labeled E.W.
Elena’s hands shook.
The first page was a copy of her driver’s license.
The second was her Social Security card.
Then bank records.
Medical history.
Her mother’s death certificate.
Samples of her signature.
Dozens of them.
Rachel whispered, “He practiced.”
Elena found sheets filled with her name over and over.
Elena Ward.
Elena Ward.
Elena Ward.
Some were almost perfect.
She dropped them.
“I’m going to be sick.”
Nora opened another envelope.
Inside were photographs.
Elena sleeping.
Elena walking into work.
Elena leaving the gym.
Elena in the grocery store.
Most had dates written on the back.
They had been tracking her routine.
One photo showed Elena entering a coffee shop.
Another showed the same location two days later.
A handwritten note:
CAMERA BLIND SPOT 7:10–7:18 AM.
Rachel sat down.
“This was planned for months.”
Nora plugged in one of the flash drives.
Files appeared.
Property transfers.
Insurance policies.
Fake medical records.
Then a video file.
Elena clicked it.
Daniel appeared on-screen sitting at his office desk.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this,” he said, “something went wrong.”
Elena stopped breathing.
Daniel continued.
“Raymond, I did what you asked. The policy is active. The property documents are filed. Elena suspects nothing.”
Rachel whispered, “Son of a…”
Then Daniel leaned closer.
“But if you touch me before I get paid, I’ve left copies with someone you’ll never find.”
The video ended.
Nora looked at Elena.
“This proves conspiracy.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed to the screen.
“Play the next file.”
The next video loaded.
This one was dated the night Elena “died.”

Daniel was standing in their garage.
And in his hand was the bottle Elena drank from every night before bed.
