CHAPTER 1 — The Secret Inside the Safe
CHAPTER 1 — The Secret Inside the Safe
The ballroom remained frozen.
Nobody laughed anymore.
Nobody lifted their phones to mock the boy.
All eyes were locked on the small child standing in front of the open vault.
Eight years old.
Oversized tweed jacket.
Messy light brown hair.
But the confidence in his eyes belonged to someone much older.
Victor Hale stared at the photograph in the boy’s hand.
His face had lost all color.
Because he knew the man standing beside him.
He knew the eyes.
He knew the smile.
He knew the watch.
The same silver pocket watch now resting inside the safe.
The boy slowly turned the photograph around.
“Do you remember him?”
Victor swallowed.
“I don’t know who that is.”
The lie came too quickly.
The guests noticed.
The boy noticed.
And the security guard noticed.
The child opened the leather folder.
Inside were old documents.
Blueprints.
Patents.
Signed agreements.
And one name written across every page.
Ethan Carter.
The boy’s father.
“My dad told me something before he disappeared.”
Victor looked at him.
“What?”
The boy held the pocket watch tightly.
“He said the truth would always find its way home.”
A whisper moved through the crowd.
Victor stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you’re holding.”
The boy looked up.
“I know exactly what I’m holding.”
A pause.
“My father’s life.”
The ballroom doors suddenly opened.
A woman in her fifties rushed inside, breathing heavily.
“Victor…”
Everyone turned.
The woman looked at the boy.
Her expression changed instantly.
Because she recognized him.
“Oh my God…”
The boy looked at her.
“Who are you?”
The woman’s eyes filled with fear.
“I knew your father.”
Victor’s face became even darker.
“Margaret, don’t say another word.”
But it was too late.
Because the boy had finally found the first person willing to tell the truth.

And Victor Hale realized…
the past he buried twenty years ago had just walked back into his life.
