Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden Inside the Jacket

The entire sunroom went silent.

Not the uncomfortable silence of wealthy guests waiting for gossip.

A different kind of silence.

The kind that came when people realized they might have judged the wrong person.

Leo’s tiny fingers finally released Chloe’s pink silk jacket.

But he didn’t step away.

Instead, he reached inside the small hidden pocket sewn into the inner lining of the jacket.

Chloe’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The confidence disappeared.

Her eyes widened.

“Marcus…” she said quickly. “Don’t let him touch my clothes.”

Her voice was no longer trembling.

It was desperate.

That was when everyone noticed.

The woman who had been acting like a frightened victim suddenly looked afraid.

Leo pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

His hands were shaking.

But his voice was steady.

“She said nobody would believe me.”

Marcus stared at him.

“What is that?”

Leo looked down at the paper.

Then at his father.

“It’s what she was hiding.”

Chloe moved forward.

“Give me that!”

For the first time all afternoon, her perfect mask broke.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t pretending.

She was panicking.

I stepped forward and struck my cane against the marble floor.

The sharp sound echoed through the room.

“Stop.”

Everyone turned toward me.

I looked directly at Chloe.

“For months, this family has listened to your words.”

My voice shook, but I didn’t care.

“Now it’s time to listen to the child you tried to silence.”

Marcus looked confused.

“Mother, what are you talking about?”

I looked at my son.

And my heart broke.

Because he was about to discover the truth about the woman he trusted.

“The truth is upstairs.”

The room became colder.

“Forty-five minutes ago, I heard your wife on the phone.”

Chloe’s face went pale.

“No.”

It was barely a whisper.

I continued.

“She was talking about a surrogate.”

A gasp spread across the room.

Marcus froze.

“What?”

Chloe immediately shook her head.

“She’s confused. She’s old. She misunderstood.”

But Leo interrupted.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

The little boy who had been called dangerous suddenly looked like the only honest person in the room.

“She said she was wearing the fake pregnancy support.”

Marcus stared at Chloe.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“Is that true?”

Chloe opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because for the first time, she had no prepared answer.

Leo unfolded the paper.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Names.

Dates.

A conversation between Chloe and an agency arranging the surrogate pregnancy.

The room exploded.

Guests leaned closer.

Some covered their mouths.

Some looked away in shame.

Because the woman they had defended had been lying to everyone.

Including Marcus.

“I found it in her office,” Leo whispered.

His voice cracked.

“She said after the baby was born, I would be sent away.”

Marcus looked at his son.

The anger in his eyes slowly disappeared.

Replaced by something much worse.

Regret.

“Leo…”

But Leo stepped back.

For the first time, he looked afraid of his own father.

“You believed her.”

Those three words hurt more than anything.

May you like

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Because he knew his son was right.
