Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN WITH NO NAME

Her real name was Rachel Mercer.

She had worked with my father years earlier.

Fraud.

Blackmail.

Identity theft.

She specialized in becoming whoever people needed her to be.

The real Vanessa Cole disappeared after Rachel stole her identity.

Police found her alive in another state.

Drugged.

Hidden in a private care facility under a fake name.

Rachel had been planning this for years.

Dad wasn’t her partner.

He was her target too.

He was guilty.

But she had intended to take everything and disappear.

At trial, Dad testified.

He admitted stealing my trust.

Admitted covering up Mom’s attempted murder.

Admitted letting me believe she was dead.

Rachel screamed at him from across the courtroom.

“You think confession makes you innocent?”

Dad looked at me.

“No.”

His answer surprised everyone.

“It doesn’t.”

The prosecutor played recordings.

The brake-line message.

The warehouse video.

The threats.

Arthur testified.

James testified.

Mom testified.

Then I did.

Rachel’s attorney tried to frighten me.

“You were six when the alleged incident happened.”

“I know.”

“Memories change.”

“Some do.”

I looked directly at Rachel.

“But I remember her voice.”

The courtroom became silent.

“I remember her telling my father, ‘She won’t survive the river.’”

Rachel’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

The jury convicted her on every major charge.

Attempted murder.

Kidnapping.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Dad pleaded guilty and received a long prison sentence.

But after court ended, he asked to see me.

I almost refused.

Then I went.

He sat behind thick glass.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

He looked down.

“I loved your mother.”

“No, you loved what she gave you.”

He started crying.

Maybe for the first time honestly.

“I’m sorry.”

I stood.

As I walked away, he tapped the glass.

“Clara.”

I turned.

“There’s something Evelyn never told you.”

My stomach dropped.

May you like

He whispered:

“Ask her why she waited three years to come home.”
