Chapter 3 - DADDY WAS OUTSIDE

Grant’s first mistake was thinking deleted meant gone.
By sunrise, detectives had obtained a preservation request for the smart-home provider’s cloud servers.
At 8:17 a.m., a technician recovered the logs.
At 8:32, Detective Lena Morales called Dana Pierce.
At 8:45, Grant Calloway stopped being treated like an angry father with poor judgment.
He became the focus of a criminal investigation.
The records showed the upstairs leak sensor had triggered at 3:06 p.m.
Grant’s phone received the first warning at 3:06.
A second at 3:08.
A third at 3:11.
At 3:12, Grant opened the smart-home app.
At 3:13, he manually dismissed the alarm.
Maisie remained behind the bolted door until Evelyn arrived at 3:24.
Eighteen minutes.
Eighteen minutes while the water rose.
Detective Morales placed the printed log on the interview table.
Grant barely looked at it.
“I didn’t know it was serious.”
“You opened the alert.”
“I get alerts all day.”
“You dismissed three leak warnings.”
“I thought Vanessa was handling it.”
Morales leaned back.
“Vanessa says you told her not to open the door.”
Grant’s head lifted.
“She said what?”
“Is that inaccurate?”
“She’s lying.”
“Why?”
“Because she panics.”
“About what?”
Grant stared at her.
Morales waited.
Grant looked toward the mirrored glass.
“I want a lawyer.”
Across town, Dana sat on the floor of Evelyn’s guest room.
Maisie was building a crooked tower from wooden blocks.
Every bedroom door in Evelyn’s house was open.
Every single one.
The night before, Evelyn had tried closing Maisie’s door halfway.
The child woke up screaming.
So Evelyn opened it.
Maisie slept facing the doorway.
Benny the rabbit under her chin.
Dana picked up a blue block.
“Can Benny tell me what happened yesterday?”
Maisie shook her head.
“That’s okay.”
Silence.
Dana placed the block on the tower.
“Can Benny tell me who closed the door?”
Maisie pushed a yellow block across the carpet.
“Vanessa.”
Evelyn swallowed.
Dana’s voice stayed even.
“Vanessa closed it?”
Maisie nodded.
“Who locked it?”
Maisie stopped moving.
Her little shoulders rose.
Dana waited nearly a full minute.
Finally, Maisie whispered, “Daddy.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Dana did not react.
“Was Daddy inside the room?”
Maisie shook her head.
“Where was he?”
“Outside.”
“What was Daddy doing outside?”
Maisie squeezed Benny.
“He was mad.”
“Why?”
“I splashed.”
“In the bath?”
A nod.
“He said big girls listen.”
Dana looked toward Evelyn for half a second, then back.
“Did Vanessa say anything?”
“She said open it.”
“And what did Daddy say?”
Maisie’s eyes filled.
“He said she has to learn.”
Evelyn stood so fast the chair behind her scraped the wall.
“Jesus Christ.”
Dana gave her a warning look.
Evelyn walked into the hallway.
She wanted to drive to the station.
She wanted to slap her son.
She wanted to grab him by the shoulders and demand to know when the boy she had raised had turned into a man who could listen to his own child scream behind a locked door.
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Then answered.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice whispered, “Evelyn?”
“Yes?”
“It’s Vanessa.”
Evelyn stiffened.
“You shouldn’t be calling me.”
“I know.”
“Then don’t.”
“Wait.”
Evelyn said nothing.
Vanessa’s breathing sounded fast.
“He’s going to blame me for everything.”
Evelyn looked toward Maisie’s room.
“You bolted her in there.”
“I shut the door. Grant locked it.”
“You left her.”
“I know.”
“You heard her screaming.”
“I know!”
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
For the first time since Evelyn had known her, the polished calm disappeared.
“I know what I did.”
Evelyn gripped the phone.
“Then tell the police.”
“I will.”
“Good.”
“But there’s something else.”
Evelyn went still.
“What?”
A long silence.
Then Vanessa said, “Grant didn’t start this.”
“What are you talking about?”
“He’s been getting paid.”
“Paid by who?”
Vanessa inhaled.
May you like
“A man named Gideon Voss.”
Evelyn forgot how to breathe.
