Chapter 2: The Daughter They Forgot

The businessman forced himself to laugh.

"You planned all this?"

"You think exposing us changes anything?"

"We'll bury you before sunrise."

I smiled.

"No."

"You already buried yourselves."

He frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Without answering...

I looked toward the balcony overlooking the ballroom.

Footsteps echoed above.

Every head turned.

An elderly man appeared.

Silver hair.

Impeccable black suit.

Calm.

Dignified.

The room froze.

Even the wealthiest people instinctively stepped aside.

Because everyone recognized him.

Victor Ashford.

The billionaire founder whose name appeared on hospitals...

Universities...

Entire city districts.

The man very few people had ever seen in public.

My father.

He descended the staircase one step at a time.

Not hurried.

Not angry.

Controlled.

When he reached me...

He removed his jacket.

Carefully draped it over my torn shoulders.

Then gently brushed a strand of hair away from my bruised face.

"My little girl..."

"I'm sorry I arrived too late."

Emotion tightened my throat.

"You came exactly when I needed you."

The businessman blinked in disbelief.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

"Your daughter died years ago."

Father slowly turned toward him.

"No."

"You merely believed the lie your partners created."

Twenty-five years earlier...

A fire had destroyed one of our family estates.

The world believed I had died.

Only a handful of people knew the truth.

Father had hidden my identity after uncovering a conspiracy inside his own business empire.

Tonight...

Those same conspirators stood inside this ballroom.

Thinking they still controlled everything.

Father faced them with eyes as cold as winter.

"You've spent decades stealing from my family."

"You tried to erase my daughter."

"And tonight..."

"You laid your hands on her."

His voice never rose.

But every word struck harder than any scream.

"I will make certain justice remembers every one of your names."

Several guests collapsed into their chairs.

Others quietly began crying.

They finally understood...

May you like

The woman they had mocked wasn't asking for rescue.

She had invited them into judgment.
