Chapter 1 - The Girl at the Door

"DAD! DON'T MARRY HER!"
The chapel doors struck the walls before Ethan Pierce could finish his vows.
An eleven-year-old girl stood in the opening, rain dripping from her brown hair. Her pale blue sweatshirt clung to her shoulders. She held a worn tan envelope against her chest.
Beside Ethan, Victoria Hale stopped smiling.
Nearly a hundred guests turned as the girl's wet sneakers squeaked down the red runner.
"Who are you?" Ethan asked.
"Lucy. Olivia's daughter."
He forgot the room. The white roses. The wedding band waiting in his brother's palm.
Olivia.
Twelve years ago, she'd told him the baby wasn't his. Nine years ago, he'd been told she was dead.
Victoria stepped into the aisle.
"Olivia died nine years ago!"
Lucy's hand shook as she pointed.
"No! You paid Mom to disappear!"
A guest whispered something. Someone else stood.
Lucy pulled a faded photograph and a stack of green-edged checks from the envelope.
"Mom kept every check. She's dying tonight."
Ethan took the photograph.
He remembered the afternoon: Olivia laughing beside him, one hand resting on the small curve beneath her shirt. They'd bought ice cream afterward. He'd talked about building a crib.
Six days later, she'd said the words that broke him.
It isn't your baby.
He looked at the first check.
Payee: Olivia Bennett.
The signature had the same long slant he'd watched sign birthday cards, contracts, and their marriage license application.
Victoria Hale.
He checked another. Then another.
Same name. Every time.
Victoria's bouquet hit the floor.
"GIVE ME THOSE!"
She reached across Lucy. Ethan caught her wrist, released it as soon as she stopped, and stepped between them.
"Don't touch her."
"Ethan, she's confused."
"Then you can explain without grabbing anything."
Victoria looked at the watching guests. Her voice softened.
"Please. We can discuss this after the ceremony."
He stared at her.
"There isn't going to be a ceremony."
Lucy swayed. Ethan caught her elbow gently.
"Where's your mom?"
"St. Anne's. A neighbor took me there. I left when she went to talk to the nurse. I saw your wedding in the paper."
"How did you get here?"
"The bus. Then I ran."
He took off his jacket and wrapped it around her.
Behind them, Victoria said, "If you leave with that child, don't expect me to be here when you come back."
Ethan didn't turn around.

Lucy grabbed his hand with both of hers.
"Please hurry," she whispered. "Mom doesn't know I found you."
