Chapter 4 - DECK FOUR

I went straight to the lower levels.
Deck Four.
The place everyone avoided.
The place nobody mentioned.
The hallway smelled like rust and old machinery.
My flashlight moved across the walls.
Everything looked normal.
That was the problem.
The best secrets are always hidden behind ordinary things.
I reached the storage area.
The lock was new.
Too new.
I touched it.
Someone had replaced it recently.
I pulled out my tools.
Thirty seconds later, the door opened.
Inside was nothing.
Almost.
Then my light caught something on the floor.
A small metal tag.
A Navy identification plate.
I picked it up.
The name was scratched.
But still readable.
Daniel Cross.
My phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
“Don’t turn around.”
Every instinct in my body screamed.
I froze.
The message continued.
“You’re being watched.”
Slowly…
I looked at the reflection in the metal wall.
A shadow stood behind me.
May you like
And whoever it was…
was holding a weapon.
